Description
Method for avoiding so-called white spots on photographic developing paper . H. Papers whose emulsion contains only insoluble silver compounds. The invention consists in a method for treating such papers in such a way that the formation of so-called white spots, which appear as a result of the development of the paper after it has been illuminated, is avoided.
It is well known that such spots occur very often and can be found up to now do not avoid with certainty; nor do you have full clarity up to now about the cause of the appearance of such spots.
The inventor has recognized through a series of experiments, in part that the appearance of the spots is due to a content in the emulsion of metal compounds, namely iron compounds, in part, this has metallic content in the emulsion originates from the raw paper, in which the latter, he presumably during the rolling of the wet paper over the heated guide and drying drum Paper machine got inside; Similarly, copper compounds in the base paper from the metal cloth. the paper cutting machine. The mentioned, in the base paper The metallic compounds that are located are now in the emulsion liquid listed below solvable and are therefore partly absorbed by the introduction, its sensitivity to light , is reduced in places by these metallic connections. Consequently the paper appears as unexposed or too weakly exposed in these areas and therefore shows itself not blackened in both development, d.b. so-called white ones occur Spots on.
On the basis of this knowledge, the finding consists mainly in such chemical treatment of the base paper before, during or after others treatment necessary to manufacture; the photographic paper, the metal content to render it harmless in the base paper by using the same water and weak acid solutions opposite is converted into insoluble or complex form, so that it is separated from the water or cannot be attacked by weak acid solutions. The metal particles are thus bound in the raw paper and can no longer influence the silver salts of the emulsion.
If the metallic content consists, for example, of iron compounds, so these are, as has been determined by experiments, in the form of ferric or ferrous compounds, probably ferric hydroxide and ferrocarbonate are present.
If the paper is now, for example, with an acidic phosphate solution or treated with another iron-binding substance, the existing iron compounds are treated during the subsequent drying of the Paper into insoluble Ferric phosphate or another insoluble or complex iron compound converted, whereby the metal content is rendered harmless, i.e. the formation of white Unable to cause stains. With a content of copper compounds in the They are readily bound to paper in a similar manner. Through trials the required quantities of the substance in question are determined by the Amounts can be increased or decreased in proportion to the purity of the base paper.
As an example of Behandlungsw.eisie the base paper or the barytiterte base paper may be treated with a solution of 3oo to 6oo parts of normal, crystallized sodium phosphate, about 5o up ioo - tartaric acid or an equivalent amount of another acid in ungefähl 7ooo parts of water to be treated which amount for About 600 m2 of paper is sufficient Lmd means that white spots can practically not be detected on the exposed and developed paper. Instead of tartaric acid, equivalent amounts of various other acids can be used.
Phosphoric acid or phosphates are used instead of sodium phosphate other alkali metals, and also arsenic or antimonic acid as well Use salts of these acids with alkali metals, in the required proportions in any case can be easily found by experiment.
It has been found that the additives mentioned not only the serve the purpose in question, but also as a chemical buffer eventual other than metallic impurities or irregularities that could cause the appearance of white spots, for example one of the same kind Distribution of hydrogen ions in the paper or in the barite mass.
