Meßgeräte dieser Art werden beispielsweise beim Parallelschalten von Wechselstromanlagen verwendet. Es gibt jedoch noch Fälle, in denen die hierbei erreichte Zusammendrängung der Skala am Ende bei weitem nicht ausreicht, sondern das Meßgerät oder Relais weit größere Ströme oder Spannungen ohne Schatten aushalten soll. Wenn beispielsweise Hochspannungsnetze starr oder über Transformatoren oder über Drosseln geerdet werden, so beträgt der Erdstrom im allgemeinen nur Bruchteile eines Amperes.
