Process for the production of tanning stones. Skins of all kinds,
as is well known, either by treating hides with tanning solutions
or tanned by rubbing with tanning powder. The manufacture of tanning solutions
is not worthwhile for the small animal breeder, since the components of the mass are too expensive
and are difficult to obtain in smaller quantities. The following difficulty arises in this regard.
For example, if only one hide is to be tanned, a whole bucket full of liquid must be used
to be prepared; as this amount cannot be used up completely, however
the rest is thrown away, because storage is out of the question. This makes it more expensive
the previous process of tanning and makes it difficult for the small animal keeper, his
Tanning skins yourself. Also rubbing the hides or skins with dry mixtures
of tanning materials (e.g. with mixtures of table salt, alum and flour) always conditionally
a certain waste of materials. All of these evils will be after the procedure
according to. the invention eliminated. The fur to be tanned is cleaned after the usual cleaning
rubbed fat and meat with a tanning stone. The process is here
the following: The fresh fur is removed from the fat and meat parts by means of a scraper
cleaned; dried skins are first put in lukewarm salt water before processing
softened. After scraping, the fur is washed or washed in warm soda water.
cleansed of blood and dirt. The water with which the fur is soaked becomes
expediently removed by squeezing and then the fur with the hair side facing up
laid down on a board or table and put the meat side on top of it with the
Rubbed tanning stone. After rubbing in, the skin is placed on top of one another with the flesh side
and wrapped in canvas or a sack with a weight weighted down on one
stored in a cool but dry place. In a few days the tanning is done,
the hide is dried and then worked in the usual way until the flesh side
is white.
This means that every small animal owner or breeder can do it himself individually
Tanning skins as the tanning stone of any size and for any number
can be made of skins to be tanned. The remnant of the stone needs
not to be thrown away, but is kept until further use,
because it is not damaged by the weather or by long periods of storage.
The tanning stone is made as follows: Mix 50 g of alum, zo
g table salt, iog saturated vitreous copper solution, 5 g glycerine.
This mixture is heated in a copper kettle and then a
Mixture added, which consists of 40 g of wheat bran. 20 g wheat flour, 5 g tannin
consists. It is stirred to a pulp and poured into molds in which the obtained
Paste remains until it cools, then taken out as a ready-to-use tanning stone
to become.
