Process for the production of potash nitrate and blanc fixe. Potash nitrate
is mostly still produced today via the detour of sodium nitrate, whereby the
artificial sodium nitrate is obtained from nitric acid and soda.
According to the invention it has now been shown that one can also use a direct route
Potash nitrate can be obtained from nitric acid and potassium sulphate, with the help of
of barium carbonate.
Teilen Blanc fixe.In this process, potassium sulfate and barium carbonate are mixed in equivalent amounts and then reacted with nitric acid. The sparingly soluble barium nitrate is surprisingly not excreted even if an acid of high concentration is used. The solubility of barium nitrate at r5 ° is only 7.5 percent (percent by weight); accordingly one would have to assume that the whole process would fail if a nitric acid with more than 15 percent HNO3 was used. It turns out, however, that acids can be used up to the highest concentration. The reaction is even more favorable at high concentrations than at medium concentrations, because at high concentrations the heat of reaction is greater, which can be used to keep large amounts of potassium nitrate in solution without external heat input. The reaction proceeds quantitatively according to the equation: KM, + z HNO3 + BaC03 - 2 KN 03 + BaSO, + M + H = O When using the so-called thin nitric acid with about 48 percent HNOg, a lye with 56 percent KNO is obtained The heat of reaction is so great that all of the KN 03 remains in solution. This is separated while still hot from the barium sulphate formed, which, as a blanc fixe of excellent quality, is a by-product of manufacture, and the lye is made to crystallize in the usual way. The mother liquor returns to the plant. Final lyes cannot collect, because even a small excess of KZSO does not do any harm. Such an excess, which can also be kept very low, is taken into account in the next step K, S04. Example. A mixture of 198 parts of BaCO3 and 174.3 parts of K.S04 is stirred into 262.5 parts by weight of nitric acid (48 percent HNO3). When the neutralization is complete, 357 parts of alkali are obtained with 203 parts of KN 03 and 23q. Share Blanc fixe.
