Description
Process for the production of chemically pure coatings from carbon on electrodes of vacuum discharge vessels, especially mercury vapor rectifiers. It is known that for the trouble-free operation of vacuum discharge vessels, in particular of mercury vapor rectifiers, the electrode surfaces as clean as possible. be have to. If metal electrodes are used, value is therefore placed on: one clean, shiny metallic surface. Such has what the delivery of the electrode heaters is concerned, the disadvantage of a low heat radiation capacity. 'It would therefore be Advantageously, a thin layer of pure carbon on the electrode surface to apply, which puts the radiation power close to that of the black body. The resilience could be effectively increased and - provided the carbon is pure - the disadvantages that other impurities would not occur the electrode surface. There are. although electrodes are known which consist entirely of carbon, but no process is known as yet which allowed after installation or even during operation. the metal electrodes a vacuum discharge tube with a chemically pure carbon coating Mistake. The invention now relates to a method for producing such : chemically pure coatings on electrodes. of vacuum discharge vessels, in particular of mercury vapor equilibrators, in which the coatings are used gaseous bodies through the electrodes to be coated into the vacuum discharge vessel are introduced and decomposed there by the discharges, so that the gaseous Bodies in the area of the active electrode surface flow out into the discharge space.
If such a gaseous body is chosen, for example, carbon-rich ones Compounds, such as acetylene, become these after flowing out into the vacuum discharge vessel under the influence of the operationally occurring electrical in the vacuum vessel Discharge charges decomposed, and the carbon released in the process is reflected in finely divided state partly down and covered on the electrode surface these with a fine layer of soot, which has the favorable properties mentioned above owns. It is essential that the clogging gaseous bodies in the immediate Neighborhood of the surface to be covered with comes into contact with the discharge.
In the picture is an embodiment example of how to do it of the method suitable electrode shown.
The electrode E is passed through the metal wall W of the vacuum vessel and is isolated from the latter in a vacuum-tight manner by the insulator J by means of some kind of seal. The electrode E has a central bore B which is connected at the top to a gas container 0 through a valve V. The valve V can be closed or opened and then forms a fine passage for the gaseous bodies. One of the "Bauer" valves used for X-ray tubes (stoppers made of porous porcelain with an upstream mercury seal) can be used for this purpose. With the aid of such a valve, gas can now be let into the vacuum vessel continuously or at suitable time intervals, in such a way that the electrode surface is continuously covered with a fine layer of carbon.
Instead of a central channel B, the electrode can also be of a whole system of canals be penetrated, which at different places on the electrode surface open into the vacuum vessel.
Form the anodes of the mercury vapor rectifiers for large scale operations a main application of the described method.
