Die meisten sind giftig, viele greifen Metall an, andere sind explosiv oder sonstwie gefährlich oder nur schwer zu behandeln, andere als Kühlmittel im übrigen geeignete Stoffe sind für den Gebrauch zu teuer. Das ebenfalls schon vorgeschlagene Dichloräthylen, das an sich besonders brauchbar erscheint, da es bei keiner Temperatur, auch nicht in Gegenwart von Wasser, Metalle angreift, sondern vielmehr rostverhindernd wirkt, da es ferner bei den atmosphärischen Temperaturen und Drücken weder in nennenswertem Maße verdunstet noch gefriert und ein beträchtlich schwereres Gas als Luft, billig, nicht giftig, nicht explosiv, sondern nur schwer brennbar ist und so bequem wie Wasser gehandhabt werden kann, hat wiederum die Eigentümlichkeit, daß es einen sehr großen Siedeintervall zeigt, weil es aus einem Gemisch von zwei Isomeren besteht, von denen eine bei q.8,8°, die andere bei 59,8,° siedet.
