Description
Process for increasing the light transmission of marble, alabaster and the like. It has already been proposed to remove marble, alabaster and the like by soaking in a solution of resins such as shellac or of cellulose preparations such as celluloid or gun-cotton, or in mineral oils or resins to make it translucent. The first type of treatment has the disadvantage that the pulp preparations, like celluloid and gun cotton, in easily evaporating. Liquids, such as alcohol, Amyl acetate, gasoline, etc., must be dissolved, which makes the process quite expensive comes to stand. The use of mineral oils and resins has the disadvantage that the exterior of the substance to be made luminous changes as the surface changes always remains oily after treatment and dust sticks to the surface. In addition, the fats oxidize in the air, freeze easily, so that the surface becomes cloudy.
These disadvantages are avoided in the present invention by the substance to be made luminous is impregnated with glycerine, which is commercially available and is readily and readily available in large quantities for the purposes of the invention can be used. In addition, glycerine only occurs when the temperature is very low freezes and keeps the building material or stone permanently transparent.
The fabric brought to the desired, relatively small thickness, marble, for example, is left to lie in the glycerine for a certain period of time. Included you can add other substances to the glycerine, preferably heating the bath will.
If the marble treated in this way is placed in front of a light source, the colorations, drawings and various branches of the stone become visible, which results in highly peculiar, fantastic decorative effects. This marble, which permanently retains its natural colors without yellowing in the least, can be used to replace alabaster, onyx, etc. in all cases where a cheap cut is required. In general, the translucent marble is used in slabs or panels from about z to. 1 5 mm thickness.
In all cases, the external effects achieved by the transparency are incomparably more varied than those which the alabaster presents, which always appears veined and pale. In the same way can also be more artificial Marble and all similar natural or artificial stones are translucent be made.
