Abstract
By expansion of the hearth lining when a blast furnace is lit, the tuyeres fixed to the furnace casing are displaced and rotated about the fixed point. The displacements impair the furnace operation and steam escaping from damaged cooling devices destroys the tuyeres. The novel lining is intended to prevent relative movements of the tuyeres and to screen the lining from the tuyeres. Plate-shaped compressible inserts (7), consisting of a plurality of alternating layers of laminated graphite (8) and metal sheets (9), are arranged in the lining in contact with the tuyeres. The inserts are enveloped in copper foils (11) and fixed to the furnace casing. The inserts absorb the thermal expansion of the lining and protect the latter from steam. <IMAGE>
