The present invention relates to a dissipative
Muffler for a gas flow, especially for attachment to the exhaust
of an internal combustion engine.
The well-known dissipative silencers, which consist of one or
consist of several tubes with a round cross-section, which are perforated radially
are and are arranged inside a housing made of sheet metal, which with a
sound-absorbing material is filled, they have the disadvantage that
are not able to provide good acoustic damping performance and
to have good fluid dynamic performance, such as low
Loss of strength; in case of use on the exhaust of a combustion engine
This disadvantage usually leads to a sharp drop in the engine
performance with the resulting disadvantage of reduced performance
and the increase in consumption.
erfolgt. The object of the invention is a dissipative silencer
without creating the disadvantages mentioned so that he with respect to the
acoustic damping is equal to or better than the known silencer
fer, but with a limitation of the power losses of the gas flow,
which flows through the silencer in such a way that no noticeable loss of
Performance occurs when applied to vehicle explosion engines
he follows.

FIG. 3 shows a longitudinal section in a plane according to III-III through the silencer according to FIG. 1.
sprechender Verbindungsstücke 4 a bzw.
In Fig. 1, 2 and 3, the muffler of dissipative type is designated in its entirety by 1, which is intended to be arranged longitudinally relative to the flow direction of a gas flow, in order to absorb the sound waves, or to attenuate, in this flow it be produced and in particular is intended to be connected in series to the exhaust pipe of an explosion engine of a vehicle of a type known per se, which is not shown for the sake of simplification. The muffler 1 comprises a housing 2 with a preferably cylindrical shape made of sheet metal, a straight pipe section 3 , which extends through the Ge housing 2 coaxially to the latter and is provided with corresponding inlet cross sections 4 or outlet cross sections 5 , in a known manner the known exhaust of the motor, not shown, to be connected by means of corresponding connectors 4 a or 5 a , and ei ne filling of sound-absorbing material 6 , which is indicated schematically by hatching and completely fills the housing 2 and in which the pipe arrangement 3 is embedded . The sound absorbing material 6 is of a type known per se and in the case of use on an explosion motor of the silencer 1 , it must also be heat-resistant. For this purpose, preferably processed mineral wool is used, which is held in position by a metallic mesh with fine mesh 6 a of any known type, whereby the phenomenon of discharge into the gas flow is prevented. The tube assembly 3 , which is preferably also made of sheet metal, is provided on its entire lateral surface with a plurality of radial through holes 8 , which connect the inside of the line 3 with the inside of the housing 2 , so as to the sound-absorbing material 6 in Bring communication with the passage cross-section, which is available to the gas flow, the inlet and outlet fronts is shown schematically in the illustration of Figure 2 in alignment with the cross-sections 4 and 5 . according to the invention, the line 3 , instead of being cylindrical like the known silencers, has a very special geometry which has surprisingly been found to be able to guarantee improved acoustic absorption, both in terms of the normal design and in terms of the tangential design, as well as an improved absorption in the noise range of low frequencies. Specifically, the line 3 along its actual longitudinal axis, in the direction of the gas flow, which is indicated by the arrow, has a cross section of variable geometry by a central section 10 with an elliptical cross section comprising a constant profile, the length of which is not critical to the To achieve the aim of the invention, which can be dimensioned in accordance with the techniques customary in this field and with known parameters (obviously the absorption and the power loss of the gas flow will also increase with increasing length of the line 3 ), as well as two mutually opposite connecting sections 11 and 12 with an elliptical, continuously variable cross-section, which connect the central section 10 to the inlet cross-section 4 or outlet cross-section 5 of the line 3 , which in turn has a round shape according to the invention and can thus be easily connected without any problems, for example via the mentioned connection points 4 a or 5 a, to any existing exhaust line, which are usually all round in shape. From a strictly geometrical point of view, a round profile is a special case of an elliptical (as is known, a circle is nothing more than an ellipse with major axes of the same length or with a relationship to one another that is equal to 1) and so it follows that the line 3 according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it has cross-sections in Rich direction of the progressive gas flow, all of which have an elliptical geometry, but a ratio of the lengths of their major axes, the larger and the smaller (designated in Fig. 1 with the letters X and Y , respectively ), which is continuously variable from a maximum equal to one in the area of sections 4 and 5 , which are accordingly round and a minimum corresponding to the central section 10 of the constant cross section; the latter is connected according to the invention without interrupting the continuity with the inlet cross-section 4 and the outlet cross-section 5 via the connecting sections 11 and 12 , which taper in opposite directions in the direction of the axes X and Y. In detail, as can be seen in FIG. 2, the connecting section 11 in the plane defined by the main axis X of the elliptical cross section of section 10 is delimited by a symmetrical profile 14 which corresponds in the longitudinal direction to a divergent Venturi arrangement and in the plane, defined by the minor axis Y of the elliptical cross section of section 10 , of a symmetrical profile 15 which corresponds in the longitudinal direction to a converging Venturi arrangement. Conversely, as can best be seen in FIG. 3, the connecting section 12 is delimited in the plane which runs through the major axis X by a symmetrical profile 16 , correspondingly in the longitudinal direction of a converging venturi arrangement and in the direction defined by the minor axis Y. Axis through a symmetrical profile 18 which corresponds in the longitudinal direction to a divergent Venturi arrangement.
fern ergibt.Accordingly, the line 3 comprises converging and diverging sections corresponding to the longitudinal sectional planes under consideration, and these sections, which belong to the lateral surface of the line 3 , are obviously provided with bores 8 and which consequently make it possible to define the perforated surface sections which are arranged in such a way that the sound absorbing material 6 is simultaneously exposed to the front of the acoustic wave, which propagates with the gas flow along the silencer 1 , both in the normal direction in alignment with the inlet and outlet cross sections 4 and 5 and in the tangential direction in accordance with the constricted connecting sections 11 and 12 , so as to effect the absorption of the acoustic wave at variable angles of incidence according to the invention, depending on the axial position of the front of the gas flow along the longitudinal axis of the silencer 1 . In the area of the cross sections 4 and 5 and the constricted sections 11 and 12 , the absorption is either in the normal direction parallel to the axis of the line 3 or in the tangential direction perpendicular to the axis of the line 3 , while along the elliptical cross section of section 10 with constant Cross section of the line 3, the absorption takes place only in the tangential direction, as is known per se, but via a passage cross section for the gas flow in a strongly flattened ellipse shape, resulting in a maximally possible ratio between the circumference of the cross section of the line 3 and the passage area, which is available to and limited by the gas flow; accordingly, in the central zone, as studies carried out by the applicant have shown, there is an increased acoustic absorption, higher than that which results in known mufflers.
The experiments mentioned have further shown that in order to achieve the best result of absorption with minimal loss of power in the gas flow, it is necessary that not only the constricted connecting portions should be limited by Venturi profiles, which, as has been found, is the profile that to achieve the lowest power loss, but also that section 11 of line 3 should have a greater length than section 12 and in particular such that connecting profiles 14 and 16 extend over a length which is greater than about 50% that of the connecting profiles 15 and 18 . It has been shown that the sound absorption, in particular in the range Be low frequencies is proportional to the length of the Verbindungsab sections 11 and 12 as well as obviously from the thickness of the layer scarf labsorbing material 6 contained in the housing 2nd Although the latter is preferably carried out with a round cross-section, it could also be produced according to a possible, but for the sake of simplicity not presented variant with a cross-sectional shape that is also el lipisches with main axes that coincide with the respective main axes X and Y of the elliptical cross section of section 10 ; this enables light a preferred absorption in the range of all middle and low frequencies, as well as the achievement of an advantage with regard to the external appearance of the silencer 1 in its entirety. Overall, the line 3 is carried out in accordance with the invention in such a way that it has cross sections which all have the same passage area for the gas flow or have a constant area with a variable profile and to enable the silencer 1 to be manufactured quickly and economically, both Housing 2 and the line 3 made by folding the corresponding mirror image half elements 22 , 23 made of sheet metal.
From the above explanation, the Er
achievable advantages; by means of the geometry described
to find an optimal ratio between the amount of sound absorbing
Section and the passage area of the gas front that the to be absorbed
Sound wave entails the consequence of maximum acoustic absorption
tion in connection with minimal loss of performance; furthermore is the
described silencer simple and economical to manufacture and be
sits a better acoustic absorption efficiency in terms of low
frequencies compared to the dissipative silencers that counter
are currently available on the market.
