Gemische eignen, erheblich verbreitert.
Anwendungsbereich.

Phasen. Gegenstand der Erfindung sind ferner flüssigkristalline

insbesondere elektrooptische Anzeigelemente, die

In den Verbindungen der Formel I sind diejenigen Stereoisomeren
bevorzugt, in denen die Ringe Cy, Pip trans-1,4-
disubstituiert sind. Diejenigen der vorstehend genannten

In den Verbindungen der Formel I, in denen A¹ für einen
in 2-Stellung durch R substituierten Ring Pyd, Pym, Pyr
oder Pyz steht, bedeutet R bevorzugt Alkyl.
Besonders bevorzugt sind Verbindungen der Formel I, worin
R jeweils geradkettiges oder höchstens einfach verzweigte
Alkylgruppen oder Alkoxygruppen mit 1-12, insbesondere
2-10 C-Atomen bedeutet.

in den Standardwerken wie S. Patai, The Chemistry of
Functional Groups, The Chemistry of Cyanates And Their
Sulphur Derivates, Part. 2, 616 ff (1977)) beschrieben
der Formel I umsetzt.
reduziert.
Als reduzierbare Gruppen kommen vorzugsweise Carbonylgruppen
in Betracht, insbesondere Ketogruppen, ferner
z. B. freie oder veresterte Hydroxygruppen oder aromatisch
gebundene Halogenatome.
B. in Form ihres p-Toluolsulfonats)
abgewandelte OH-Gruppe enthalten.
Geeignete Reduktionsmittel
hierfür sind z. B. Wasserstoff unter Verwendung
von Übergangsmetallkatalysatoren wie Platin oder
Palladium, insbesondere Palladium/Aktivkohle.
entsprechenden Nitrile, deren Darstellung z. B. in den
DE OS 27 02 598, 26 36 684 und 31 51 367 beschrieben
ist, mit verschiedenen Reduktionsmitteln wie Alanaten
und Boranaten, vorzugsweise Lithiumaluminiumhydrid,
oder durch Hydrieren unter Verwendung von Übergangsmetallkatalysatoren,
vorzugsweise Raney-Nickel, erhalten.
vorzugsweise Lithiumaluminiumhydrid, erhalten
werden.
Auch können metallorganische Verbindungen, die (p-1)
Methylengruppen enthalten, mit Aldehyden, vorzugsweise
mit Formaldehyd, bzw. solche, die (p-2) Methylengruppen
enthalten, mit Epoxiden, vorzugsweise Ethylenoxid, zu
den entsprechenden Hydroxy-Verbindungen umgesetzt werden.
Diese können mit reaktiven Sulfonsäurehalogeniden in
Gegenwart einer Base, vorzugsweise eines tertiären
Amins, wie z. B. Triethylamin, Pyridin oder Lutidin, zu
den entsprechenden Sulfonsäureestern, beispielsweise zu
Tosylaten, Brosylaten, Nosylaten, Mesylaten, Triflaten,
entsprechenden Isocyanate der Formel I erhalten.
Die Reaktionspartner werden ohne Lösungsmittel oder
zweckmäßig in Gegenwart eines inerten Lösungsmittels
miteinander zur Reaktion gebracht.
Als Lösungsmittel eignen sich vorzugsweise Ether wie
Diethylether, Dibutylether, Tetrahydrofuran, Dioxan,
Amide wie Dimethylformamid, Hexamethylphosphorsäuretriamid,
Kohlenwasserstoffe wie Hexan, Cyclohexan, Benzol,
Toluol, Xylol, Halogenkohlenwasserstoffe wie Dichlormethan,
Chloroform, Tetrachlorkohlenstoff, Tetrachlorethylen,
Chloroform, Tetrachlorkohlenstoff, Tetrachlorethylen,
(z. B. J. Org. Chem. 31, 596 (1966)).
Ein weiteres vorteilhaftes Verfahren besteht darin, die
entsprechenden Isonitrile, deren Darstellung z. B. in
DE-OS 37 04 340 beschrieben ist, zu Isocyanaten der
Formel I zu oxidieren. Als Oxidationsmittel sind hierbei
Quecksilberoxid, Ozon, Halogen in Dimethylsulfoxid oder
Pyridin-N-oxid besonders geeignet.
Auch durch Umsetzen der entsprechenden Carbonsäurehalogenide
mit Trimethylsilylazid oder Tri-n-butylstannylazid
lassen sich unter Curtius-Umlagerung Isocyanate der
Formel I erhalten.
-cyclohexyl-ester, Phenylcyclohexane, Cyclohexylbiphenyle,
Cyclohexylcyclohexane, Cyclohexylnaphthaline, 1,4-Bis-
cyclohexylbenzole, 4,4'-Biscyclohexylbiphenyle, Phenyl-
oder Cyclohexylpyrimidine, Phenyl- oder Cyclohexyldioxane,
Phenyl- oder Cyclohexyldithiane, 1,2-Bis-phenylethane,
1,2-Biscyclohexylethane, 1-Phenyl-2-cyclohexylethane,
gegebenenfalls halogenierten Stilbene, Benzylphenylether,

Die wichtigsten als Bestandteile derartiger flüssigkristalliner
Phasen in Frage kommenden Verbindungen lassen

Methoden herstellbar.
Die erfindungsgemäßen flüssigkristallinen Phasen enthalten
etwa 0,1 bis 99, vorzugsweise 10 bis 95%, einer oder
mehrerer Verbindungen der Formel I. Weiterhin bevorzugt
sind flüssigkristalline Phasen, die 0,1-50, insbesondere
0,5-30% einer oder mehrerer Verbindungen der
Formel I enthalten.
Leitsalze, vorzugsweise Ethyl-dimehtyl-dodecyl-ammonium-
4-hexyloxybenzoat, Tetrabutylammonium-tetraphenylboranat
oder Komplexsalze von Kronenethern (vgl. z. B. I. Haller
et al., Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. Band 24, Seiten 249-258
(1973)) zur Verbesserung der Leitfähigkeit, dichroitische
Farbstoffe zur Herstellung farbiger Guest-Host-Systeme
oder Substanzen zur Veränderung der dielektrischen Anisotropie,
der Viskosität und/oder der Orientierung der
nematischen Phasen zugesetzt werden. Derartige Substanzen
sind z. B. in den DE-OS 22 09 127, 22 40 864, 23 21 632,

beschrieben.
Die folgenden Beispiele sollen die Erfindung erläutern,
ohne sie zu begrenzen. Vor- und nachstehend bedeuten
Prozentangaben Gewichtsprozent. Alle Temperaturen sind
in Grad Celsius angegeben.
"Übliche" Aufarbeitung bedeutet im Folgenden: Nötigenfalls

oder Toluol und/oder Abtrennen der organischen
Phase, Trocknen, Eindampfen und Reinigen durch Destillation
unter vermindertem Druck und/oder Kristallisation
und/oder Chromatographie.
