Es wurde gefunden, daß man als Natriumsulfat dadurch Ätznatron gewinnen kann, daß man über erhitztes Natriumsulfat, kristallwasserhaltiges oder entwässertes, ein Gemisch von Wasserstoff und Wasserdampf leitet. Die Ausführung des Verfahrens kann beispielsweise in der Art erfolgen, daß man trocknes Natriumsulfat in ein Ouarzrohr bringt und Wasserstoff darüber leitet, den man zuvor durch erwärmtes Wasser geführt hat. Man führt die Reaktion so lange fort, bis kein Schwefelwasserstoff mehr aus .dem Rohr entweicht. Die Reaktion beginnt bereits bei etwa 400°. Die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit nimmt mit steigender Temperatur zu, so daß es zweckmäßig ist, bei Temperaturen zwischen 6oo und 7oo° zu arbeiten.
