Description
Calcium hydride has been used so far produced exclusively in such a way that one by molten calcium metal Hydrogen headed. The procedure is great because of the high price of calcium expensive. Even so, the hydride became during the war when it was on the price not . arrived, used for the convenient production of hydrogen. With cheap Price is the usability of calcium hydride a very versatile, so z. B. for the conversion of low-quality liquid fats into valuable solid fats (so-called Fat hardening), for the hydrogenation of crude petroleum to increase the gasoline yield, for the reduction of acetaldehyde (from carbide) in ethyl alcohol etc. Particularly important the hydride is also used to extract ammonia from the nitrogen in the air. If you pass nitrogen over the heated hydride, ammonia and Calcium nitride, which in turn supplies ammonia with water: the inventor has now found that calcium hydride can also be obtained by using calcium chloride conducts hydrogen at elevated temperature. Hydrogen chloride and calcium hydride escape remains in the reaction tube. The decomposition of calcium chloride by the hydrogen starts at around 55o °. The speed of reaction grows with increasing Temperature up to the melting point of calcium chloride (about 78o °).
To carry out the process, for example, it is placed in a pipe made of suitable material, because of the high reducing power of the resulting calcium hydride Should be free of silica, expediently anhydrous calcium chloride, conducts well dried hydrogen over it and heated to 600 to 7oo °. If you put the reaction until no more hydrogen chloride escapes, pure one can be found in the reaction tube Calcium hydride.
The hydrogen chloride formed as a by-product in the reaction can be used to make carbonate of lime (chalk, marble) or from the lime formed by the action of water on calcium nitride is the starting material, the calcium chloride to regain. If one uses the hydrogen chloride for the decomposition from calcium nitride, ammonium chloride is obtained, an excellent nitrogen fertilizer, and calcium chloride directly.
