Abstract
A pneumatic duct able to draw in loose fibres produced when end breakage occurs is provided next to each spindle. Light is directed into the duct and any fibres in the duct reflect the light via a focussing lens to a photocell (18) whose output is supplied through an amplifier (21) and then a comparator (22) for eliminating noise, and then is integrated (23). The integrated value over a set time is compared (24) with a reference value (Vr) and if it exceeds the reference value, it is taken that end breakage has occurred and an indication (25) of this is given.
