Packaging Unit

The innovation concerns a packaging unit with:

a set of cartons arranged in parallel rows in the form of rectangular blocks, the rows abutting against each other and the first and last cartons of the rows together forming a first and a last front surface, respectively; a wrap around the rows of cartons, which wrap is folded around fold lines running parallel to the rows of cartons and thereby forms a base surface, opposite side surfaces and an upper surface opposite the base surface,

which wraps the boxes in the rows. 10

Such a packaging unit is known from US-A-4,555,979.

In the known packaging unit, for example, two rows of boxes are arranged on a plate with raised edges and a second plate filled with boxes can be placed on top of this. The wrap surrounds the package on its four sides, including the base of the first plate. The wrap surrounds the package in a clamping manner. This prevents a plate from being pushed out of the closed wrap. The raised edges of the plates and the wrap together prevent a single box from being removed from the package.

The well-known packaging unit has the advantage that, due to the wrap, it requires relatively little packaging material compared to an outer box and yet still keeps the boxes reliably fixed in the unit.

Although the well-known packaging unit saves a lot of packaging material compared to conventional packaging units, it still requires a relatively large amount of packaging material and a relatively large amount of material is released when unpacking. 25

The aim of the innovation is to provide a packaging unit of the type mentioned above, which will enable even greater savings in packaging material.

There are edge strips with a width w running along the base, the side surfaces or the top of the roll and connected thereto, resting against the first or last end surface and fastened to one another, with which the roll holds each carton located in the first or last end surface.

The new packaging unit has the advantage that it does not require a plate, since the plate's function of holding the boxes in place is integrated into the wrap. This not only saves packaging material, but also simplifies logistics.

Since the edge strips can generally be relatively narrow, for example just like the raised edges of the known plates for example a few cm, e.g. 2-4 cm, the advantage of the packaging unit is retained that a print on the roll to reproduce the contents of the packaging unit is not necessary, since the unit is largely open at the end faces and the packed boxes are visible.

Another advantage of the edge strips integrated into the wrap is that it is relatively unimportant for holding the boxes in place whether and to what extent the wrap clamps around the rows of boxes.

The packaging unit also has the advantage that it can be easily stacked with several of its surfaces forming a flat base.

The edge strips fastened to one another, which lie against the first and last end faces, also make it unnecessary to close the roll itself, for example by fastening the top to a side face where they meet when the roll is produced from the cut.

In a favorable embodiment of the packaging unit, the top is divided into a first and a second part, each of which is connected to a respective side surface on a fold line. The seam between the parts can, for example, be in the middle of the top, in the middle between the side surfaces. The parts of the top can abut against each other at the seam. In general, the packaging unit with such a seam has such a strength that the seam hardly opens any further during normal handling of the packaging unit. If there is a row of boxes at the location of the seam, with the boxes each extending under the first and second parts of the top, the packaging unit is also relatively torsion-resistant, i.e. the first and second parts of the top can hardly be moved against each other at the seam. suitable, when arranged vertically with a side surface serving as a lower surface, for absorbing forces exerted by a second unit placed on the packaging unit in question. If desired, the first and second parts of the upper side can have interlocking teeth that protrude into the wrap, for example. Such teeth can prevent the parts from shifting relative to one another at the seam and thus increase the torsional strength of the packaging unit.

In a special embodiment, the top is divided into a first and a second part, each of which is connected to a respective side surface, and the first part has a dimension corresponding to the width w of the edge strips of the side surfaces. In a favorable modification, the second part has a lip which projects into the wrap. This lip can prevent the second part from sliding over the first part under pressure. The lip thus ensures that the first and second parts abut against each other. In a further modification, the second part has tongues on its edge strips which are inserted under the edge strips of the relevant side surface. The tongues give the packaging unit greater torsional strength. Stitching on the lip and tongues is generally not necessary.

In a following embodiment, the upper surface is also divided, but the first and second parts are spaced apart from each other, in particular they each have a dimension that corresponds to the width of the edge strips of the side surfaces. This embodiment can leave a large section of the upper surface of the package of boxes uncovered and thus offer a further saving in packaging material.

It is interesting if a part or several parts of the top side have a dimension, namely the distance from the edge to the adjacent fold line, which corresponds to the width of the edge strips. In a special embodiment, the base surface has perforation lines that are spaced apart from one another and run along the fold lines and that extend into the relevant edge strips. In particular, the perforation lines have a distance from the relevant fold line that corresponds to the width w of the edge strips of the side surfaces. As far as possible, the top side has corresponding perforation lines. If a part or parts of the top side already have a dimension w, then such perforation lines in the top side are neither possible nor necessary.

form a panel that can be displayed directly on a shelf with the corresponding boxes. This design also has the advantage that when opened, only a section of the base and possibly a section of the top, together with the stapled sections of the relevant edge strips, are left as waste that can be easily folded flat.

There may be layers arranged in a base area. The layers may have two or more rows. However, the fact that the wrapper holds each carton lying in a face with its edge strips means that the layers can only have more than two rows if there are a maximum of two layers. If there were a third layer, not all the cartons in the middle layer would be held in place by the edge strips. Cartons could then have been removed from the unopened package without this being visible on the outside of the packaging unit. For the same reason, there can only be more than two layers in the packaging unit if the layers contain a maximum of two rows.

Even in a packaging unit with a two-part top, where the top parts are spaced apart, there can be many layers with a maximum of two rows per layer or two layers with several rows per layer, provided that each carton lying in an end face is held in place by an edge strip.

It is also interesting if the unit has layers with only two rows per layer. The unit then has the advantage that after removing the material between the perforation lines, two panels with boxes are obtained that take up a stable position. The boxes are then all held together by the panels obtained.

The number of boxes in a row and the number of rows and layers in a packaging unit are determined depending on the volume and weight of a box and also the type of goods packaged, which determine the way the boxes are presented. The above factors also determine the quality of the material used for wrapping. However, it is easy for the packaging specialist to choose suitable parameters in a specific case.

The new packaging unit is ideal for an application for packing one or two electric lamps, e.g. light bulbs, per box. Lamps generally have a very small size in relation to their volume.

Mass. However, their volume is relatively small, so that a relatively large number of lamps, e.g. 40, can easily be packed in as many or half as many boxes in a single packaging unit.

It is advantageous if the material of the wrap is cardboard, such as duplex, mini-corrugated, semi-corrugated or corrugated cardboard. With corrugated or semi-corrugated cardboard, the corrugation preferably runs across the fold lines.

Examples of the packaging unit according to the innovation are shown in the drawing. They show:

In Fig. 1, see also Fig. 3, the packaging unit has a number of cartons 2 arranged in parallel rows 1 in the form of rectangular blocks. The rows 1 lie against one another. The first 21 and last cartons 22 of the rows 1 together form a first 11 and a last end face 12, respectively. The packaging unit also has a wrap 3 around the rows 1 of cartons 2. The wrap 3 is folded around fold lines 30 running parallel to the rows 1 of cartons, see Fig. 2, 4, and thus has a base area 31, opposite side faces 32 and an upper side 33 opposite the base area 31. The wrap 3 keeps the cartons 2 enclosed in the rows 1.

The packaging unit has edge strips 311, 321, 331 with a width w running along the base surface 31, the side surfaces 32 and the top surface 33 of the roll 3 and connected thereto. These edge strips lie against the first 11 and the last end surface 12 and are fastened to one another, e.g. with adhesive, e.g. with a hot melt adhesive. The fastenings are shown in Fig. 1 with a dot. The roll 3 holds each box 21, 22 lying in an end surface 11, 12 with the edge strips 311, 321, 331.

In Fig. 1, the upper side 33 is divided into a first part 33' and a second part 33". The parts 33', 33" are connected to a respective side surface 32 on a fold line 30, Fig. 4, and are spaced apart from one another in Fig. 1.

The parts 33', 33" of the upper side 33 have a dimension w which corresponds to the width of the edge strips 321 of the side surfaces 32, see also Fig. 4.

The base area 31 of the roll, see Fig. 3 and 4, has perforation lines 312 which are spaced apart at a distance w from one another and run along the fold lines 30 and have an extension 314 in the relevant edge strips 311.

When producing the packaging unit, see Fig. 4, the parts 33' and 33" of the top can be folded around the relevant fold lines 30 and raised. The edge strips 321 of the side surfaces 320 are also raised. The edge strips 331 can then be folded over and stapled to the relevant edge strips 321. If desired, the edge strips 311 of the base surface 31 can also be folded over during this process. The resulting roll 3 then has the shape shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The resulting roll 3 then resembles two panels connected to one another that do not have a raised edge. On the two side surfaces 32 in Fig. 2, ten boxes 2 are arranged each, which in the embodiment shown each contain two 230V/60W light bulbs. The boxes 2 are always arranged in two rows 1 of five cartons 2 are present. As shown in Fig. 2, the cartons 2 can be folded over together with the relevant side surface 32 by allowing them to pivot through 90° about the relevant fold line 30. When the fastenings between the edge strips 321 and the edge strips 311 have been made, the packaging unit is ready. The unit then has rows 1 in two layers with two rows 1 next to each other in each layer. However, if desired, or in the case of cartons 1 of different dimensions, the unit could have, for example, more than two layers of rows.

From Fig. 4 it is clear that the parts 33' and 33" of the top have a dimension w which corresponds to the width w of the edge strips 311, 321 and 331. It is also shown that the distance between the perforation lines 312 and the adjacent folding lines 30 also corresponds to this width w. If in the packaging unit of Fig. 1 the section of the base 31 and its edge strips 311 between the perforation lines 312 or between their extensions 314 has been severed, two panels with raised edges and each with ten boxes 2 in them are created. A compression value of 1850 N was used.

To pack the 20 boxes 2, 103 g of corrugated cardboard was used in the unit shown, while 207 g are required to form the known packaging unit mentioned at the beginning with these boxes.

In Figs. 5 to 8, corresponding parts have the same reference numerals as in the previous figures.

In Fig. 5, see also Fig. 6, the top 33 has two equal parts 33' and 33", which meet in the middle between the side surfaces 32. Both parts have a perforation line 332 with an extension 334 in the edge strip 331, see Fig. 6. If the two parts 33' and 33" are shortened by cutting off the material to the side of the perforation lines 332,334, and if the section in the base 31 between the perforation lines 312 is cut off, two panels filled with cardboard are created with raised edges of equal height.

The packaging unit of Figures 7 and 8 has a top 33 with a first part 33' with a dimension w and a second part 33", which has a lip 335 which projects loosely into the wrap 3 in Figure 7, thereby preventing the second part 33" from sliding away under pressure over the first part 33'. Laterally from the lip 335, the second part 33" abuts against the first 33'. On the edge strips 331 there are tongues 336 which in Figure 7 lie loosely under the edge strips 331 of the first part 33', on their inside. They give the unit greater torsional strength.

The first part 33' has a dimension of the order of the width w of the edge strip 321. The second part 33" has a perforation line 332 with a distance w from the fold line 30. The second part 33" can be separated along the perforation line 332 and the base area 31 between the perforation lines 312 can be removed. This then produces two panels with cardboard boxes.
