Kultursubstrat für PflanzenGrowing substrate for plants
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Kultursubstrat für Pflanzen. The invention relates to a culture substrate for plants.
In addition to conventional potting soil and pure hydroponics, granules made from treated fired clay are also used as a growing substrate for plants. Compared to potting soil, clay granules have the particular advantage of having a higher water absorption capacity. This makes it possible to fill the flowerpot with a quantity of water that is up to about a quarter of the pot's volume each time you water it, without the plant being damaged by this relatively large quantity of water. The plants need to be watered less often and can even go for longer periods of time, for example while on holiday, without watering at all.
35The invention is based on the object of creating a plant substrate which is simple and cost-effective to produce, whose water absorption capacity is higher than that of the known clay granulate and which is also suitable for use as a culture substrate for greening roofs.

The object is achieved according to the invention by a granulate made of aerated concrete, whereby the aerated concrete is produced by mixing finely ground quartz sand, lime, cement, natural gypsum and aluminum powder, making this mixture into a paste with water, molding and then steam hardening, and whereby quartz sand, lime and water are each used in an amount of over 10%, cement and natural gypsum each in an amount of 1 to 10% and aluminum powder in an amount of less than 1%. Granulate with a grain size of 5 to 15 mm has proven to be particularly advantageous.
The aerated concrete granulate according to the invention is excellent as a culture substrate for plants in drainless flowerpots, balcony boxes and planters and guarantees good growth of all kinds of plants. It is used like potting soil or the well-known clay granulate, by first filling the plant container with the granulate, then inserting the root ball and filling the remaining free space with granulate. The granulate can store water well and for a long time due to its porous structure. It has a very high water absorption capacity of approx. 33 vol%. In practice, it has been shown that containers filled and planted with the granulate according to the invention can also be filled to the brim with water without any problems and thus watering can be omitted for up to two months without the plant being damaged in any way. The granulate also has an antifungal effect. This avoids the risk of fungal infestation, which would otherwise be caused by prolonged, strong moisture in the root ball. The granulate also protects the plants from root burn, which can easily occur when plants are exposed to strong sunlight, as can be the case with balcony plants or potted plants placed outdoors. The granulate does not heat up as much due to its white color and low thermal conductivity.

The aerated concrete granulate according to the invention can also be used as a base material for green roofs. The granulate is applied to the root-resistant coated roof surface in a single layer with a thickness of up to 10 cm without any additional materials. The seeds can then be sown or balled plants can be planted. Protection against drifting by laying down mats is not necessary. For flat roofs, the outlet is placed one centimeter above the level of the waterproofing so that enough water can be absorbed by the granulate after rain or irrigation. For sloping roofs, a drip irrigation hose is inserted at the top edge of the roof before coating with granulate, which enables additional irrigation with drinking water or collected rainwater. For roof pitches of more than 10°, it is also recommended, as with other substrates, to install horizontal thresholds (e.g. made of roof battens placed upright under the sealing film) at intervals of 2 to 3 meters.
When used for green roofs, the low specific weight of the granulate of approx. 0.4 kg/dm 3 is particularly advantageous. The roof drainage is not affected in any way by the applied granulate. Its high water retention capacity ensures that the vegetation is kept sufficiently moist even in dry periods and does not dry out so easily. This effect is further supported by the white color of the granulate, which means that the temperature generated in the granulate layer when exposed to sunlight and thus the evaporation remains low compared to other materials. The granulate enables good germination and growth conditions, but is low in nutrients.

Zur Wachsturnssteuerung können praktisch alle handelsüblichen Düngemittel verwendet werden. so that it does not grow too luxuriantly, which is generally undesirable on roof surfaces. Due to the relatively high proportion of lime, the granulate is also able to buffer acid rain over many years and counteract the acidifying effect of the organic substance that forms. Practically all commercially available fertilizers can be used to control growth.
The granulate is simple and inexpensive to produce, as it can be obtained by grinding aerated concrete waste that is generated during the production of aerated concrete blocks or aerated concrete slabs.
