Description
The invention relates to a thermal camouflage tarpaulin for covering hot spots to prevent detection in a thermal image.
Wärmebildbe-Camouflage nets are used for military camouflage of fixed and mobile military facilities, such as motor vehicles, tanks and the like. The camouflage nets are not only intended to provide camouflage from infrared cameras or thermal imaging detectors, but also from radar detection. The camouflage net is intended to prevent microwaves that hit an object from being reflected back by it. Furthermore, it is intended to prevent identification by sensors in the infrared or thermal imaging range.

For this purpose, a camouflage net with a specific material composition has a suitably adapted hole structure in the net to provide protection in the visible and near infrared range, to generate good attenuation values over a broad spectrum of the microwave range and to have low imitation in the thermal imaging range (see e.g. DE 14 23 287 C2). Such camouflage nets generally fulfill their purpose. However, camouflage becomes problematic if there is a local hot spot under the camouflage net, e.g. from the engine of a vehicle or even a stationary engine. This local hot spot can be located in the infrared range, e.g. in the far infrared range, due to the net structure.
In order to avoid this detection, tarpaulins are already known from practice to cover the hot spot. However, the known tarpaulins have various disadvantages, such as poor mechanical strength and a limited temperature range with the risk of burns at too high a temperature. This means limited handling for rough practical operation.

The present invention is therefore based on the object of avoiding the above disadvantages of the prior art, in particular of creating a thermal camouflage tarpaulin that is effective within a large temperature range, i.e. no hot spot is detected in a thermal imaging device, while at the same time providing good mechanical strength and high temperature resistance or non-flammability.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by a carrier fabric made of glass filament, which is provided on one side with a silicone elastomer containing aluminum powder and on the other side with a silicone elastomer containing metal pigments whose remission values are in the range of optical camouflage.
The glass filament fabric according to the invention as a carrier fabric, on both sides of which silicone elastomer layers are applied, with the specified additives prevents the heat rays from hot spots from escaping unhindered, in particular by means of an overlying
gelegtes Tarnnetz, und damit durch ein Wärmebildgerät lokalisiert werden können.camouflage net, and can thus be located by a thermal imaging device.
The thermal camouflage tarpaulin according to the invention not only has good mechanical strength for easy handling for robust operation, but it is also non-flammable. This means that it can be placed directly on the hot spots without danger. The silicone elastomer with the aluminum powder on one side ensures a correspondingly high heat reflection, while the silicone elastomer on the other side with the metal pigments creates camouflage against visual detection. The metal pigments can be used to achieve a corresponding surface color design that is adapted to the environment and/or the camouflage net above it.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, it can be provided that the silicone elastomer is a cross-linkable silicone elastomer, whereby hydrogen polysiloxane can be used as a cross-linking agent. With a cross-linkable silicone elastomer of this type (addition-cross-linking), a very intensive and therefore permanent bond with the carrier fabric is created.
In practice, a proportion of 1 to 3% hydrogen polysiloxane in the silicone elastomer has proven to be particularly advantageous for cross-linking.
Very good values regarding heat reflection have been shown with a proportion of 15 to 20 percent by weight of aluminum powder.
The metal pigments mixed into the silicone elastomer on the other hand should advantageously be selected so that remission values in the range light green to dark green are obtained, for which chromium oxides, for example, have proven to be particularly suitable.
In order to achieve sufficient stability or strength, it is advantageous to use a carrier fabric which has a basis weight of 150 to 250, preferably 200 g/m 2 .
The most suitable basis weight values for the silicone elastomer to be applied on both sides are 30 to 60 g/m 2 per side.
Good practical values have been obtained for the carrier fabric made of glass filament when it is manufactured in a plain weave.
The basic composition of a pattern of thermal camouflage tarpaulin is explained below using a drawing that shows the pattern in cross-section at a greatly enlarged size.
The basis of the thermal camouflage tarpaulin is a carrier fabric 1 made of glass filament or a glass filament fabric in a plain weave 1/1 with a surface weight of 200 g/m 2 .
The carrier fabric 1 is now coated on one side, namely the side facing the object to be covered, using the direct coating method with a liquid, cross-linkable silicone elastomer 2 to which approximately 15 to 20 percent by weight of aluminum powder 3 has been added. The silicone elastomer coating 2 can be between 30 and 60 g/m 2 . A hydrogen polysiloxane with a high content of reactive Si-H is used as the cross-linking agent. 2 percent by weight is added to the silicone elastomer 2.
After applying the paint, the product must be heated to approx. 150 ° C for 3 minutes to vulcanize it. The vulcanization time depends on the temperature used. This means that higher temperatures result in a shorter vulcanization time and vice versa.
The other side of the carrier fabric 1, namely the outside, which is directed upwards, is also coated with silicone elastomer 4. However, instead of aluminum powder 3, a proportion of 15 to 20 percent by weight of metal pigments 5 is mixed into the silicone elastomer 4 on this side. The silicone elastomer coating 5 on this side can also have a basis weight of 30 to 60 g/m 2 .
In order to achieve good remission values in the light green to dark green range and thus camouflage in the visible optical and near infrared range, various metal pigments, preferably chromium oxides, can be used.
Die Praxis hat gezeigt, daß die solare Rückstrahlung {Wärmereflexion) der auf diese Weise gebildeten Wärme-Practice has shown that the solar reflection of the heat generated in this way
Further tests have shown that the tear strength at a width of 5 cm can be over 1900 N in the warp and over 1200 N in the weft. It was also found that even when the thermal camouflage tarpaulin was exposed to a temperature range of over 1000 0 C for several minutes, no damage occurred. It was also found that the camouflage tarpaulin is practically incombustible.
