In vielen Betrieben, z. B. bei Anlaßdynamos für umsteuerbare Walzwerksmotoren, ist es erforderlich, die Erregerströme elektrischer Maschinen in kürzester Zeit in weiten Grenzen zu ändern. Diesen Stromänderungen widersetzt sich die Selbstinduktion, mit der alle Magnetspulen behaftet sind. Bei stationärer Stromverteilung fließt in den Spulen α und b ein Strom gleicher Größe, die Drehmomente, die die beiden Spulen auf den Regler ausüben, heben sich daher auf, und dieser befindet sich in seiner Ruhelage. Schaltet man von Hand mit dem Regulator R Widerstand ab, so wird der Strom im ganzen Stromkreise zunehmen. Der zusätzliche Strom wird aber bei der Stromverzweigung seinen Weg fast ausschließlich durch den Zweig a, r nehmen, da ihm der induktive Widerstand w im anderen Zweige den Weg versperrt. Hierdurch wird das Drehmoment der Spule α dasjenige der Spule b überwiegen, und der Regler wird derartig aus seiner Ruhelage bewegt werden, daß er Widerstand abschaltet.
