Vorzugsweise hat der Nagel einen viereckigen, insbesondere rhombischen Querschnitt mit nach innen eingewölbten Seitenflächen. Die Spitze des Nagels ist durch eine Pyramide gebildet, welche auf diesem rhombischen, eingewölbten Querschnitt aufgesetzt ist. Der Schaft des Nagels weist also vier hohlschliffartige Schneiden auf, welche in der Spitze zusammentreffen. Dadurch schneidet sich der Nagel relativ leicht in das zu nagelnde holz ein.
