Mit Stoff bekleideter Tennisball. Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 22. August 1913 ab.Tennis ball covered with fabric. Patented in the German Empire on August 22, 1913.
Die Befestigung dieser Stoffstücke auf der Oberfläche des Gummiballes erfolgt nach dem bisher üblichen Verfahren, außer gegebenenfalls durch Aufkleben, durch eine Naht, mit der die beiden StückeThe clothing of tennis balls with fabric is usually done in such a way that from the Two double-tongue-shaped pieces of fabric are cut out, one inside the other, one inside the other Result in spherical surface. The attachment of these pieces of fabric to the surface of the rubber ball takes place according to the usual procedure, except if necessary by gluing, through a seam that joins the two pieces
However, this excessive seam has the disadvantage that, because the edges of the fabric are pulled against each other by the thread on the contact curve a bulge is created which slightly extends over the surface of the finished ball protrudes. The presence of this bulge has many advantages Disadvantages with itself. Once the ball bounces off the ground or off the racket at an unpredictable angle. Then the friction at the bead point is greatly increased, and thereby the seam is easily torn, especially since the excessive suture thread, even if it is out resilient material is made (gut string), cannot give way. Finally the fabric frays slightly at the seam edge. In any case, observation shows that the well-known tennis balls are always damaged first at the seam.
This drawback is to be remedied according to the invention in that the two double tongue-shaped parts from which the spherical surface is formed, not with smooth Edge, but are nested in a zigzag or serpentine line. In this case the seam does not need to be created overly, but you can use I or 2 Sew threads that run continuously in the direction of the imaginary edge through the through the Zigzag lines formed tips or tongues are pulled through. The aforementioned bead does not arise here, rather the surface becomes completely smooth. Have the threads also not very much friction in the fabric, so that in the event of stress on one Position by hitting the ball and not so easily will tear. Finally, the resulting tips can also be placed much more safely on the Glue on the rubber ball so that you can possibly do without a thread at all.
In Fig. 4 ist ein nachThe invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, which show Fig. Ι to 3 the usual type of fabric clothing of tennis balls, while the 4 and 5 explain the new type of manufacture. Fig. 1 shows one of the double-tongue type Pieces of fabric, two of which, placed one inside the other, on the surface of the rubber ball are placed and then fall into the surface of the sphere. Fig. 2 shows one in the Manufacture of a tennis ball in which one piece of fabric is complete, the other is only partially sewn on. Fig. 3 shows a tennis ball manufactured in this way with seam. der neuen Art bekleideter Tennisball in halbfertigem Zustande dargestellt, während Fig. 5 denselben Tennisball fertig zeigt.of the new type of clothed tennis ball is shown in a half-finished state, while Fig. 5 shows the same tennis ball finished.
In the previously known type of clothing tennis balls with fabric, such as already noticed, two double-tongue-like pieces of fabric ι (Fig. 1) around a rubber ball 2 (Fig. 2), so nested, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, and the abutting edge 3 is through a Thread 4 sewn overcast. This creates the hatching indicated, above-mentioned bead 5, which has the disadvantages described.
According to the invention, the edges of the pieces of fabric are now so with when they are folded nested prongs 6 provided, as can be seen from FIGS. 4 and 5 permit. This creates very significant advantages. First, the full areas the pieces of fabric are smaller, so that they are better here by themselves, without forming folds, Apply to the surface of the rubber ball. The prongs are then placed in an unconstrained manner, likewise without the formation of wrinkles Sticking to the rubber ball is therefore much less of a cause for detachment the surface. because there are no internal tensions. One can therefore do the sewing may be completely dispensed with under certain circumstances. However, sewing is used for greater safety at least recommend. But then it takes place through one or two threads which, like FIGS. 4 and 5 show, drawn straight through the prongs, but not overly are sewn. The threads experience little friction in the prongs, so that they are easy when the ball changes shape as a result of the impact can give way and stretch if they are made of elastic material, which of course is not the case when sewing is overcast. So the threads will never break. But every one of them falls further Reason for the formation of the above-mentioned beads away, and thus the ball on the one hand allows a much safer aim, but on the other hand the balls do not use the seam faster than in the other places.
