Die in der Literatur (s. Annalen 202 [1880], S. 26; Gazz. Chim. ital. 12 [1882], S. 292; Be-' . richte 42 [1909],. In the literature (see Annalen 202 [1880], P. 26; Gazz. Chim. ital. 12 [1882], p. 292; Loading ' . judge 42 [1909] ,. S. 3800) described method for the preparation of polynitrocarbazoles, especially tetranitrocarbazole, these bodies are of little use for technical production suitable because a very large excess of fuming nitric acid is used, whereby the The process is uneconomical and the yield is poor as a result of oxidations.
We have now succeeded in finding a process for producing these bodies in a technically simple manner, in pure form, and with good yields. The process consists in that the carbazole or its N-alkyl derivatives are first sulfated until they are soluble in water and the sulfonic acids thus formed are then treated with powerful nitrating agents. The sulfo groups that have entered the molecule are successively replaced by nitro groups. These nitro bodies are valuable starting materials for the representation of developers and dyes.
: . ■ Beispiel::. ■ Example:
'■■ 34 kg Carbazol werden bei gewöhnlicher Temperatur in 200 kg konzentrierter Schwefelsäure (66°Be\) gelöst und diese Lösung so lange gelinde erwärmt, bis eine Probe des Sulfierungsproduktes vollständig wasser- oder alkalilöslich ist. Man -kühlt dann stark ab und nitriert durch Zusatz von 56 kg Mischsäure (enthaltend 25 kg Salpetersäure von 100 Prozent). Bei dieser Phase der Nitrierung läßt man zweckmäßig die Temperatur nicht 40 '■■ 34 kg carbazole are dissolved at ordinary temperature in 200 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid (66 ° Be \) and the solution gently warmed for so long, until a sample of the Sulfierungsproduktes completely water- or alkali-soluble. It is then cooled down sharply and nitrated by adding 56 kg of mixed acid (containing 25 kg of 100 percent nitric acid). During this nitration phase, the temperature is expediently not left to 40

The mixture is then allowed to stir for a few hours at 15 to 25 ° C. and the necessary amount of fuming sulfuric acid is then added to bind the water of reaction formed. The further nitration to the tetranitro body is best done by stirring in dry saltpetre. First, at 20 are added to .30 0 C. Potash 20 kg or 17 kg (dry) to sodium nitrate, can again stirred for some time at this temperature and quit the nitration by stirring again the same amount of nitric at 30 to 50 0 C. The entire nitration mixture is then heated to between 80 ° and 100 ° C. with thorough stirring until a sample is insoluble in water. It is then poured onto ice, filtered and washed with water. Of the press cake 1 is then angeschlemint with water, made weakly alkaline with soda, boiled and filtered again; small amounts of polynitrosulfonic acids are removed in this way.
Nach Beendigung der Sulfierung wird durch Zugabe von Oleum die Schwefelsäure auf die StärkeThe nitro body obtained in this way is completely pure tetranitrocarbazole and melts without Recrystallize at 283 ^ 5285 ° C, as Ber. 42 [1909], p. 3800 is given. Recrystallized from nitrobenzene, yellow, rhombic ones are obtained Panels Including Crystal Nitrobenzene. In the representation of polynitro-N-alkylcarbazoles it is more advantageous in the sulphonation of the N-alkylcarbazoles instead of 66 ° Be ". Sulfuric acid eobisgo percent sulfuric acid to use. The sulfonation then proceeds smoothly without the formation of by-products. To When the sulphonation is terminated, the sulfuric acid is added to the starch by adding oleum
