Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polyestern für lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft die Herstellung von ^, ßäthylenisch
ungesättigten Polyestern, die sich als Basis für lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze eignen, in einem
Schmelzkondensationsverfahren besonderer Art.
Lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze sind bekannt (DT-AS 1 129 688, 14 94 010, DT-PS 14 94 437, DT-OS 19 56 284).
Es handelt sich dabei um Polyesterharze, deren Polyester neben oc , ß-äthylenisch ungesättigten Dicarbonsäuren und
zweiwertigen Alkoholen ß,tf-äthylenisch ungesättigte Äthergruppen
- z. B. über Glycidallylathercder Trimethylolpropandiallyläther - einkondensiert enthalten. Gemäß DT-AS 14 94
können diese Polyester nach dem Schmelzkondensations- oder Azeotropverfahren bei 140 - 200° C hergestellt werden.
Aus J. Scheibers "Chemie und Technologie der künstlichen Harze", Band I, Wissenschafti. Verlagsgesellschaft mbH,
Stuttgart 1961, Seite 568, ist bekannt, daß für den Ablauf der Veresterungen ein saures Milieu vorteilhaft ist, wes-

halb es sich empfiehlt, zunächst einen kleinen Teil des zweiwertigen Alkohols zurückzuhalten und erst gegen Schluß
der Operationen zuzusetzen.
Die Taktzeiten von Lackierstraßen hängen direkt von der Trocknungszeit der verwendeten Lacke, d. h. also von der
Reaktivität der Lackbindemittel ab. Es besteht natürlich ein Bedürfnis, die Reaktivität lufttrocknender Bindemittel
zu steigern und damit die Taktzeiten weiter zu verkürzen selbstverständlich ohne die Härte der ausgehärteten Überzüge
zu beeinträchtigen - und so dem Lackierer höhere Durchsätze zu ermöglichen.
Es wurde nun überraschenderweise gefunden, daß lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze mit vergleichsweise höherer Reaktivität
entstehen, wenn man zuerst ein Carboxylgruppenhaltiges
Polyesterkondensat, das frei von ß,t -äthylenisch ungesättigten Äthergruppen ist, herstellt und dieses anschließend
mit ß, <jf -äthylenisch ungesättigtem Ätheralkohol
umsetzt.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polyestern für lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze
aus
a) oc, ß-äthylenisch ungesättigten Dicarbonsäuren oder ihren
Anhydriden,
b) zweiwertigen Alkoholen, die frei von ß,^4-äthylenisch
ungesättigten Äthergruppierungen sind,
c) ß, £ -äthylenisch ungesättigten Ätheralkoholen und ggf.

d) aromatischen, alicyolisehen oder gesättigten aliphatischen
Dicarbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden,
e) Monocarbonsäuren und
f) ein-, drei- oder vierwertigen Alkoholen,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man unter Sauerstoffausschluß
bei 140 - 220, vorzugsweise 180 - 210, 0C die Komponenten
a, b und ggf. d, e, f zu einem Polyestervorkondensat mit
einer Säurezahl über 70, vorzugsweise über 80, und einer Hydroxylzahl (durch Acetylierung bestimmt) unter 40, vorzugsweise
unter 30, umsetzt und erst diesem Vorkondensat die Komponente c bei 140 - 200, vorzugsweise 140-180, C
einkondensiert.
Da die Reaktivität der erfindungsgemäßen Polyester von der Anzahl der ß, Jf-äthylenisch ungesättigten Äthergruppen pro
Gewichtseinheit Polyester abhängt, läßt sich durch Einbau der entsprechenden ß, £-ungesättigten Monoäther zweiwertiger
Alkohole die höchste Reaktivität erzielen.
Ein weiterer Gegenstand der Erfindung sind nach diesem Verfahren hergestellte Polyester.
Es ist empfehlenswert, in erster Stufe so lange zu verestern,
bis die Säurezahl nicht mehr wesentlich sinkt. Die Molverhältnisse der einzelnen Komponenten für die erste Stufe sind
so auszuwählen, daß bei dieser Arbeitsweise eine Säurezahl über 70, vorzugsweise über 80, und eine Hydroxylzahl unter
40, vorzugsweise unter 30, erreicht werden.
Außerdem ist es im Interesse eines hochreaktiven Endprodukts vorteilhaft, bei Verwendung von Maleinsäure oder Maleinsäureanhydrid
den ersten Reaktionsschritt nicht abzuschließen, bevor nahezu 100 % des Maleinats in Fumarat umgelagert sind.
Die Menge des im zweiten Reakt ions schritt eingesetzten ß,Jf
äthylenisch ungesättigten Ätheralkohols kann in weiten Bereichen schwanken, da der Ätheralkohol nicht nur durch

Veresterung seiner Hydroxylgruppen, sondern auch durch noch weitere, nicht ganz geklärte Reaktionen in das Polyestermolekül
eingebaut wird (vgl. DT-PS 14 94 437). Es kann ohne weiteres das Dreifache der, bezogen auf die Säurezahl
des sauren Vorkondensats, äquivalenten Menge Ätheralkohol eingesetzt werden. Um gegen Ende der Kondensation einen unkontrolliert
starken Anstieg der Viskosität (Gefahr der Gelierung!) zu vermeiden, ist es zweckmäßig, die Kondensate
bei stufenweise verminderter Temperatur zu Ende zu führen. So läßt sich die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit beliebig herabsetzen,
so daß Säurezahl und Viskosität besser überwacht werden können.
Das Polyester-Endprodukt soll mindestens 0.1 Mol ß, /'-äthylenisch
ungesättigte Äthergruppen und 0.2 Mol 06 , ß-äthylenisch ungesättigte Dicarboxylatgruppen pro 100 g ungesättigtem
Polyester enthalten.
Lufttrocknende Polyesterharze auf Basis der erfindungsgemäß
hergestellten ungesättigten Polyester zeichnen sich durch besondere Vorteile aus: Verglichen mit Harzen auf der Grundlage
einstufig hergestellter Polyester, weisen sie eine erheblich verkürzte Trockenzeit bei Raumtemperatur auf.
Aus derartigen Polyesterharzen hergestellte Überzüge sind wesentlich härter als Lackierungen aus konventionellen
lufttrocknenden Polyesterharze. Diese Befunde überraschen umso mehr als es nach einem ähnlichen zweistufigen Schmelzkondensationsverfahren
- nämlich der Bildung eines Vorkondensats aus ^C, ß-äthylenisch ungesättigter Dicarbonsäure bzw.
ihrem Anhydrid und ß, ,'f-äthylenisch ungesättigtem Ätheralkohol
und anschließender Veresterung dieses Vorkondensats mit zweiwertigem Alkohol - nicht möglich ist, brauchbare
lufttrocknende Polyester herzustellen: entweder geliert das Vorkondensat vorzeitig oder man muß bei extrem niederen
Temperaturen so schonend verestern, daß sehr lange Veresterungszeiten nötig sind und folglich schlechte Raum/Zeit-Ausbeuten
resultieren, wobei auch noch Produkte minderer Qualität entstehen.

Als Komponente a eignen sich oC , ß-äthylenisch ungesättigte
Dicarbonsäuren mit in der Regel 4 oder 5 C-Atomen oder deren Anhydride, wie z. B. Maleinsäure oder Maleinsäureanhydrid
und Fumarsäure. Verwendet werden können z. B. jedoch auch Mesaconsäure, Citraconsäure, Itaconsäure oder Chlormaleinsäure.
Als Komponente b eignen sich zweiwertige Alkohole mit in der Regel 2 bis 8 C-Atomen. Als zweiwertige Alkohole können
Äthylenglykol, Propandiol-1,2, Propandiol-1,3, Diäthylenglykol,
Dipropylenglykol, Tri- und Tetraäthylenglykol,
Butandiol-1,3, Butandiol-1,4, Neopentylglykol, Hexandiol-1,6,
bis-oxalkyliertes Bisphenol A, Perhydrobisphenol und andere
eingesetzt werden. Bevorzugt verwendet werden Äthylenglykol, Propandiol-1,2, Butandiol-1,3, Diäthylenglykol, Dipropylenglykol
und Neopentylglykol.
Die ß, Χ -äthylenisch ungesättigten Ätheralkohole c enthalten
neben mindestens einer veresterungsfähigen Hydroxylgruppe
noch mindestens einen, vorzugsweise mindestens zwei, ß, ft" äthylenisch
ungesättigten Ätherrest der Formel

Geeigente Ätheralkohole c, die in der Regel 6 bis 20
C-Atome enthalten, sind z. B. Allyl-, Methallyl-, Äthallyl-, Chlorallyl-, Crotyl-, Methylvinylcarbinol- oder Buten (2,3)-diol-1.4-äther,
wie oxäthylierter oder oxpropylierter Allyl-, Methallyl-, Äthallyl- oder Chlorallylalkohol, Glycerin-mono-
oder -diallyläther, Trimethyloläthan-mono- oder -dimethallyläther,
Trimethylolpropan-mono- oder -diäthallyläther, 1,3,5-Hexantriol-mono-
oder -dichlorallyläther, 3|3-Dimethylolbutanol(2)-mono- oder -dicrotyläther, Pentaerythrit-mono-,

-di- oder -triallyläther, Trimethylolpropanmethylvinylcarbinyläther,
Buten(2,3)-diol-1.4-mono- oder -dioxyäthyläther, Tetramethylolcyclohexanoltetraallyläther, Buten(2,3)-diol-1,4-monoallyläther,
gemischte Äther wie Trimethylolpropan-mono-allyl-mono-crotyläther
und Pentaerythrit-mono- oder -diallyl-mono-benzyläther.
Als Komponente d kommen aromatische und cycloaliphatische Dicarbonsäuren
mit in der Regel 8 bis 10 C-Atomen sowie aliphatische gesättigte .Dicarbonsäuren mit in der Regel 4 bis 10 C-Atomen
oder ihre Anhydride in Frage.
Beispiele für die zu verwendenden aromatischen, cycloaliphatischenund
aliphatischen gesättigten Dicarbonsäuren oder ihre rivate sind Phthalsäure oder Phthalsäureanhydrid,Isophthalsäure,
Terephthalsäure, Hexa- oder Tetrahydrophthalsäure bzw.
deren Anhydride, Endomethylentetrahydrophthalsäure oder deren Anhydrid, Bernsteinsäure bzw. Bernsteinsäureanhydrid und
Bernsteinsäureester und -chloride, Glutarsäure, Adipinsäure, Sebacinsäure. Um schwerentflammbare Harze herzustellen,
können z. B. Hexachlorendomethylentetrahydrophthalsäure
(Hetsäure), Tetrachlorphthalsäure oder Tetrabromphthalsäure
verwendet werden. Auch die Addukte von Maleinsäure an Dicyclopentadien oder Terpene eignen
sich als Komponente d.
Weitere Modifikationen sind möglich durch Einbau bis
zu 10 Mol-%, bezogen auf die Alkohol- bzw. Säurekomponente,
ein-, drei- und vierwertiger Alkohole f mit 1-6 C-Atomen, wie Methanol, Äthanol, Butanol, Isooctanol,
Allylalkohol, Benzylalkohol, Cyclohexanol und Tetrahydrofurfurylalkohol,
Trimethylolpropan, Glycerin und Pentaerythrit

sowie einbasischer Säuren e wie Benzoesäure, Acryl- oder Methacryls äure.
Die als Zahlenmittel gemessenen Molekulargewichte M der
lufttrocknenden Polyester liegen gewöhnlich zwischen ca. 500 und 5000, vorzugsweise zwischen ca. 1000 und
3000 (dampfdruckosmometrisch gemessen in Dioxan und
Aceton; bei differierenden Werten wird der niedrigere als der korrekte angesehen).
Um die Polyesterharze vor unerwünschter vorzeitiger Polymerisation
zu bewahren, empfiehlt es sich, bereits bei der Herstellung 0,001 bis 0,1 Gew.-Teile, bezogen auf 100 Gew.-Teile
Mischung aus ungesättigtem Polyester und copolymerisierbaren Monomeren, Polymerisationsinhibitoren oder
Antiooxydantien zuzusetzen. Geeignete Hilfsmittel dieser Art sind beispielsweise Phenole oder Phenolderivate, vorzugsweise
sterisch gehinderte Phenole, die in beiden ortho-Stellungen zur phenolischen Hydroxygruppe Alkylsubstituenten
mit 1-6 C-Atomen enthalten, Amine, vorzugsweise sekundäre Arylamine und ihre Derivate, Chinone, Kupfersalze organischer
Säuren, Anlagerungsverbindungen von Kupfer-(I)halogeniden
an Phosphite, wie z. B. 4,4VBis-(2,6-di-tert.-butylphenol\
1,3,5-Trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-benzol,
4,4'-Butyliden-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-m-kresol), 3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-benzyl-phosphonsäurediäthylester,
N,N'-Bis-(ß-napthyl-p-phenylendiamin, N,N'-Bis-(i-methylheptyl)-p-phenylendiamin,
Phenyl-ß-naphthylamin, 4,4'-Bis-(OC
> OC-dimethylbenzyl)-diphenylamin, 1,3,5-Tris-(3,5-ditert

Kupferoctoat, Cu(I)Cl/Triphenylphosphit, Cu(l)Cl/Trimethylphosphit,
Cu(l)Cl/Trischloräthyl-phosphit,-Cu(l)Cl/Tripropylphosphit,
p-Nitrosodimethylanilin. Weitere geeeignete
Stabilisatoren sind in "Methoden der organischen Chemie" (Houben-Weyl), 4. Auflage, Band XIV/1, S. 433 - 452, 756,
Georg Thieme-Verlag, Stuttgart, 1961, beschrieben.
Die auf Basis der erfindungsgemäßen Polyester hergestellten Harze besitzen allgemein die bekannten lufttrocknenden
Eigenschaften der ß, )f-ungesättigte Ätherreste enthaltenden
ungesättigten Polyesterharze und können deshalb in inerten Lösungsmitteln gelöst und ggf. mit den üblichen Trockenstoffen
versetzt zur Herstellung von oxydativ trocknenden Lacken dienen. Sie können aber auch mit radikalisch polymerisierbaren
Vinyl- bzw. Vinylidenmonomeren zu homogenen, unlöslichen und unschmelzbaren Kunststoffen copolymerisiert werden.
Als copolymerisierbare Vinyl- und Vinylidenverbindungen eignen sich in der Polyestertechnologie gebräuchliche ungesättigte
Verbindungen,die bevorzugt C< -substituierte Vinylgruppen
oder ß-substituierte Ally!gruppen tragen, bevorzugt Styrol; aber auch beispielsweise kernchlorierte und
-alkylierte bzw.-alkenylierte Styrole, wobei die Alkylgruppen 1-4 Kohlenstoffatome enthalten können, wie z. B. Vinyltoluol,
iOiviny !benzol,oC-Methylstyröl, tert.-Butylstyrol,
Chlorstyrole; Vinylester von Carbonsäuren mit 2-6 Kohlenstoffatomen;
bevorzugt Vinylacetat; Vinylpyridin, Vinylnaphthalin, Vinylcyclohexan, Acrylsäure und Methacrylsäure
und/oder ihre Ester (vorzugsweise Vinyl-, Allyl- und Methallylester) mit 1-4 Kohlenstoffatomen in der Alkoholkomponente,
ihre Amide und Nitrile, Maleinsäureanhydrid, deren -halb- und -diester mit 1-4 Kohlenstoffatomen in der

Alkoholkomponente, -halb- und -diamide oder cyclische
Imide wie N-Methylmaleinimid oder N-Cyclohexylmaleinimid;
Allylverbindungen wie Allylbenzol und Allylester wie Allylacetat, Phthalsäurediallylester, Isophthalsaurediallylester,
Fumarsaurediallylester, Allylcarbonate, Diallylcarbonate,
Trially!phosphat und Triallylcyanurat.
Die Polyesterharze enthalten in der Regel 30 - 80 Gew.-Teile
Polyester und 70 - 20 Gew.-Teile copolymerisierbare
Vinyl- oder Vinylidenverbindungen.
Die Mischpolymerisation kann nach den bekannten Verfahren, z. B. durch Bestrahlung mit Elektronenstrahlen ohne weitere
Zusätze; nach Zugabe von Photoinitiatoren, wie z. B. Benzoin oder dessen Äthern und solchen, die in der DT-OS 24 29 527
beschrieben sind, durch Bestrahlung mit UV-Licht; nach Zugabe von Peroxiden durch Erwärmung auf die Zerfalltemperatur
des Peroxids; nach Zugabe von Peroxiden durch das Zumischen von Beschleunigern wie beispielsweise Cobalt-, Vanadium-,
Mangan- oder Eisensalzen oder aromatischen Aminen bei Raumtemperatur ausgelöst werden.
Die Mischpolymerisate sind auch an den mit Luft in Berührung stehenden Oberflächen hart und unlöslich, selbst dann, wenn
die Härtung nach entsprechender Katalyse bei Raumtemperatur durchgeführt wird. Solche Lösungen der erfindungsgemäßen
ungesättigten Polyester in radikalisch copolymerisierbaren Vinyl- bzw. Vinylidenmonomeren eignen sich deshalb besonders
zur Herstellung von Lacküberzügen und Spachtelmassen, die an der Oberfläche und unabhängig von der Schichtdicke auch in
tieferen Schichten trocknen.

Dieser Qualitätsvorteil ist um so überraschender, da die
nach den erfindungsgemäßen zweistufigen Kondensationsverfahren hergestellten ungesättigten Polyester gegenüber einstufig
hergestellten sowohl auf Maleinsäureanhydrid- als auch auf Fumarsäurebasis die genannten Vorteile aufweisen,
d. h. die vorteilhaften Eigenschaften werden durch das zweistufige Kondensat!onsverfahren und nicht allein durch
einen möglichst hohen Fumaratgehalt des ungesättigten Polyesters erzielt, der durch eine möglichst quantitative
Umlagerung von Maleinat zu Fumarat erzeugt wird oder durch den Einsatz von Fumarsäure direkt gegeben ist.
Den erfindungsgemäßen Lacklösungen können auch Celluloseester wie z. B. Cellulose-acetate, -propionate, -butyrate
oder deren Mischester, zur Verbesserung der Oberflächenglätte oder Verkürzung der Trockenzeit zugesetzt werden,
ebenso Thixotropier- und Glättemittel, Pigmente und Füllstoffe üblicher Art.
Ferner können die erfindungsgemäßen Polyesterharze selbst oder im Gemisch mit radikalisch polymerisierbaren Vinyl-.monomerenggf.
zusammen mit Füll- und Faserstoffen zu Spachtelmassen, Gießharzen oder Preßmassen verarbeitet
werden, die sich nach den üblichen Verfahren härten lassen. Den Massen können auch zur Verminderung des bei der Härtung
auftretenden Schrumpfs allgemein bekannte, schrumpfmindernde
Additive, auch low-profile-Additive genannt, zugesetzt
werden wie thermoplastische Polymere, Polykondensate oder Polyadditionsverbindungen.
Die folgenden Beispiele und Vergleichsbeispiele erläutern die Erfindung.

Im nachfolgenden zitierte Teile sind Gewichtsteile, Prozentangaben
bedeuten Gew.-%. Die Viskositätsmessungen erfolgten in 60 %igen Lösungen in mit 0,1 % tert.-Buty!brenzcatechin stabilisiertem
Styrol nach 4 DIN 53 211. In allen Beispielen und Vergleichsbeispielen wird während des Veresterungsprozesses
der Zutritt von Luft durch Hindurchleiten eines Stickstoffstromes durch das Reaktionsgemisch verhindert.
Die Veresterung erfolgt in einem RUhrkessel mit absteigendem Kühler nach dem Schmelzkondensationsverfahren.
A. Veresterungsverfahren in zwei Stufen (erfindungsgemäß)
Nach der Einwaage der Veresterungskomponenten der 1. Stufe
wird nach dem Verdrängen der Luft durch Stickstoff unter Rühren schnell auf 150° C aufgeheizt und danach innerhalb
von 2 Stunden die Temperatur auf 210° C gesteigert. Nach 3 Stunden bei 210° C ist kein Abfallen der Säurezahl mehr
festzustellen (Säurezahl ca. 90). Es wird auf 180° C gekühlt und die Veresterungskomponenten der zweiten Stufe
einschließlich Toluhydrochinon unter Luftausschluß zuzugeben. Es wird bei 180° C weiter kondensiert, bis bei einer Säurezahl
von ca. 32 die Viskosität einer Auslaufzeit von 30 see
entspricht (DIN 53 211), danach bei 165° C, bis bei einer Säurezahl von ca. 29 die Viskosität einer Auslaufzeit von
40 see entspricht und danach bei 150° C, bis bei einer
Säurezahl von ca. 28 die Viskosität einer Auslaufzeit von
50 see entspricht. Danach wird möglichst schnell auf 100° C
abgekühlt und der Polyester 65 %±g in Styrol gelöst.

B. Veresterungsverfahren in einer Stufe (Vergleichsbeispiele)
Nach der Einwaage sämtlicher Veresterungskomponenten einschließlich
Toluhydrochinon wird nach dem Verdrängen der Luft durch Stickstoff unter Rühren schnell auf 150° C geheizt,
1 Stunde bei 1500C gehalten und danach die Temperatur um 10° C pro Stunde bis 180° C gesteigert. Ab 180° C ist die
Fahrweise identisch mit der des zweiten Teils des zweistufigen Veresterungsverfahrens. Der Polyester wird 65 %ig
in Styrol gelöst.

Aus den styrolischen Lösungen der erfindungsgemäßen Polyester werden Lackfilme folgendermaßen hergestellt:
Jeweils 8,35 g der 65 %igen Polyesterlösungen in Styrol
werden mit 1,65 g Styrol verdünnt. Die Lösungen werden mit 4 % eines 50 %igen Cyclohexanonhydroperoxids und 1 % einer
2Ö %igen Kobaltoctoatlösung (2,2 % Co) in Toluol versetzt
und mit einem Filmziehgerät 300/u starke Schichten auf
Glasplatten aufgezogen. Die Temperatur bei der Filmtrocknung beträgt 24° C.
Die Zeit, in der die Oberflächen der Filme klebfrei werden, sowie die Pendelhärten der Filme (24 Stunden nach dem Aufziehen)
sind in Tabelle 2 zusammengestellt. Sie demonstrieren deutlich die Vorteile der nach dem erfindungsgemäßen zweistufigen
Veresterungsverfahren hergestellten Polyester gegenüber den einstufigen Vergleichspolyestern.

Claims (2)
- Patentansprüche: η η / r ο π26^56 5 /1, Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polyestern für lufttrocknende ungesättigte Polyesterharze ausa) »x , ß-äthylenisch ungesättigten Dicarbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden,b) zweiwertigen Alkoholen, die frei von ß, $' -äthylenisch ungesättigten Äthergruppierungen sind,c) ß, ^ -äthylenisch ungesättigten Ätheralkoholen und ggf.d) aromatischen, alicyclischen oder gesättigten aliphatischen Dicarbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden,e) Monocarbonsäuren undf) ein-, drei- oder vierwertigen Alkoholen,dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man unter Sauerstoffausschluß bei 140 - 220° C die Komponenten a, b und ggf. d, e, f zu einem Polyestervorkondensat mit einer Säurezahl über 70 und einer Hydroxyzahl (durch Acetylierung bestimmt) unter 40 umsetzt und erst diesem Vorkondensat die Komponente c bei 140 - 200° C einkondensiert.
