Brennstoffelement mit unangreifbaren Elektroden.Fuel element with unassailable electrodes.
Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 15. Juni 1912 ab.Patented in the German Empire on June 15, 1912.
~~ .It is well known that many attempts have been made to obtain the chemical energy of coal directly into electrical energy with the help of suitably constructed galvanic elements to be transferred, but so far without practical success. Subject of the present invention is the description of a galvanic element in which one electrode is purged with oxygen or more simply with atmospheric air, while to the other Electrode hydrogen, hydrocarbons or water gas (essentially a mixture hydrogen and carbon dioxide). ~~.
It has long been known that two unassailable Electrodes, e.g. B. platinum-coated platinum, capable of delivering a continuous current, when one electrode is flushed with air and the other with hydrogen (Grove's gas chain). These currents are but extremely weak because the element polarizes strongly when it draws current. If the hydrogen is replaced by carbon oxide or hydrocarbons, i.e. gases that also have a reducing effect, the temperature drops the current is practically zero, because these gases do not charge the unassailable electrode capital.
Up to now, aqueous sulfuric acid or an alkaline acid has usually been used as the electrolyte Solution. Many tests have shown that the amperage which an element generates without an excessive voltage drop a given electrode size, increases sharply as soon as Oxydationsqder Reducing agents are present which, oxidized by the oxygen, are reduced by the hydrogen.
Benutzt man z. B. als Lösung Schwefelsäure mit Zusatz eines Eisensalzes, etwa Eiscnsulfat, so gehen zwar unter den oben beschriebenen Bedingungen an den Elektroden fortdauernd die ReaktionenBut there is one more precaution you should take when using the energy of the Wants to convert fuels as much as possible into electrical energy. Used one z. B. as a solution of sulfuric acid with the addition of an iron salt, such as ice sulfate, so go continuously on the electrodes under the conditions described above the reactions

Fe + H — Fe + H (Wasserstoffelektrode) Fe + H - Fe + H (hydrogen electrode)

B. die französische Patentschrift 345118.in front of you, while the current supplied by the element is reversed at the hydrogen electrode the ferrous ions are oxidized to ferric ions and the reverse process is carried out on the oxygen electrode takes place. The element works as a so-called chain of oxidation and reduction. Such elements have already been proposed; cf. z. B. the French Patent 345118.
Da nun selbst eine schwache Stromentnahme diese Bedingung sofort stört, so muß das Element, wie auch die Erfahrung bestätigt, stark polarisierbar sein und man erhält in der Praxis viel kleinere elektromotorischeBut now the theory of galvanic power generation developed by the inventor teaches that considerable electromotive forces can only occur when the concentration at the hydrogen electrode the ferric ions, at the oxygen electrode that of the ferric ions is extremely small. There now even a weak current draw immediately disturbs this condition, the element must, as experience confirms, be highly polarizable and you get in practice much smaller electromotive

. t ■ ■' ■ . Forces than the formation of water. Corresponds to hydrogen and oxygen (1.23 volts according to Nernst and von Wartenberg). This ; but means a similarly limited use of the energy of the hard coal as it is produced by the steam engine and gas engines. . t ■ ■ '■.
The matter is completely different ! if one uses two or more salts of metals which, like iron, are different
; dene Oxydationsstufen besitzen. One can then choose one metal in such a way that that Electrode potential that a submerged platinum electrode assumes at equivalent Quantity ratio of the two oxidation stages for the one metal near the hydrogen electrode, for the other metal is near the oxygen electrode. This condition can be found e.g. B fulfilled with the titanium salt, its equilibrium potential according to Diethelm and Foerster (Zt. f. physik, Chem. 62 p. 143, 1908) in the vicinity of the Hydrogen electrode and thallium salt, where the equilibrium between Thalli and thallo ions is close to the oxygen potential. Accordingly finds that one is mixed with sulfuric acid, which is simultaneously admixed with thallium sulfate and titanium sulfate , a hydrogen-oxygen chain is maintained, which even with high power consumption supplies electromotive forces of 1 volt and more. But this means an exploitation of fuel, which leaves the efficiency of all previously known engines far behind.
So percent efficiency versus about 20 percent efficiency in gas engines powered by water gas Of course, the inventor regards the above two salts as only Examples; instead of the thallium salt, a cerium salt can also be used, etc.
Incidentally, it is not necessary that, as it is. B. in the experiments of Lan.ger and The moon was the case, oxygen and hydrogen or air and water gas directly to the Electrode to be conducted; the above-described mode of operation of the element allows it very well that the solutions in question are placed in special vessels in which there are about large Quantities of the solid catalyst are located, treated with oxygen or with hydrogen and that the thus oxidized, or respectively reduced, solutions to the electrodes guided and made effective by an electric motor.
