Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 3. Oktober 1911 ab.Patented in the German Empire on October 3, 1911.
The purpose of the present process is to remove foreign metals from tin which are in smaller amounts occur than that with which the metal concerned with tin forms the eutectic alloy.
Are the impurities z. B. lead or copper, it becomes 33 percent lead or 1 percent Copper will be the theoretical limit at which purification according to the procedure is possible.
Purification consists in separating the impure metal into a larger part, which is freed from the impurities, and a smaller part in which the whole multitude is accumulated by impurities, and since this accumulation is only up to the eutectic Composition can be brought, in practice only metal alloys of Tin with traces of copper or about 5 percent lead can be considered for the process come.
Die Reinigung erfolgt in folgender Weise:The cleaning is done in the following way:
B.beforehand according to the usual procedures (e.g.
Kupfer.Saigern etc.) has been freed from some impurities (e.g. iron), melted down. The metal is then gradually cooled as the fire is extinguished, and a stream of cold air may be blown through the draft. The metal is stirred and crystals begin to separate out. The crystals formed are gradually exhausted and placed in a smaller sheet metal vessel with a perforated bottom, which is expediently set up in such a way that the "mother liquor" that runs off runs back to the melting kettle. When the smaller vessel has been filled with tin crystals, and metal that has not remained liquid can be removed from the crystals by pressing, shaking, etc., the crystal mass is thrown out and the perforated vessel is put back in its place. You then continue scooping out as long as there is still metal in the kettle. As a result, the metal mass is divided into several fractions O 1 , a 2 . . . a 6 divided by appropriately choosing the size of the perforated vessel so that the metal mass is divided into six parts. A new portion of metal is now melted down again in the boiler and processed as indicated above and divided into six parts, etc., until the entire amount of metal to be cleaned has been treated. The like factions are now brought together. The exhausted crystals consist of pure tin and are therefore not mixed crystals of tin and lead or copper.
The method is based on this knowledge. Just the molten metal that as one Kind of mother liquor wets the crystals, contains the impurities, and all the more so more, the later the crystals are exhausted from the kettle.
EsNow the combined portions α Λ are melted in the crystallization kettle and treated further as indicated above. It
The combined groups a 2 are then added in the just melted state, and the scooping up of precipitated crystals is continued until the impurities in the metal in the kettle have the same degree of concentration as that
B. etwa 20 Prozent Blei oder etwa 1 Prozent Kupfer enthält neben demjenigen Wismut, Arsen, Antimon usw., das das Metall enthalten haben mochte.ίο have reached group a s , whereupon this group is added in a just molten state, etc., and these processes are continued by always adding molten metal of the kind that is already present in the kettle. Solidification tests are a sufficiently reliable means of determining the approximate amount of impurities for this purpose. The metal that is deemed sufficiently pure goes out of the process and is remelted. There are also the last exhausted metals or the last mother liquor removed when the same z. B. contains about 20 percent lead or about 1 percent copper in addition to what the metal may have contained bismuth, arsenic, antimony, etc.
The method has with the known method of Pattinson for the concentration of Silver in lead has a certain similarity, but this principle is not generally applicable. A condition for the possibility of the process is that the precipitated crystals are not mixed crystals. It was previously known that lead, which is made from a lead-silver alloy crystallized out, does not form mixed crystals with silver, and inventor has now found, what was not previously known, that tin behaves similarly asserts against lead and copper, so that a cleaning of tin with little lead, Copper etc. is possible according to the specified process, but not a purification of Lead that contains little tin.
