Metal filament lamps have a much lower resistance when cold (about the fifth part) than when they burn normally. The current surge when switching on such lamps is particularly disturbing in the case of flasher switches because of the stress on the contacts f and the effect on the network. The present invention eliminates this drawback almost completely for so-called two-color switches, that is, flashing switches which switch on two groups of lamps alternately, provided that both groups are the same or almost the same size. Both groups are connected in series and alternately short-circuited by the changeover switch. Assuming that each group would need an operating current of 10 amperes, an ordinary changeover switch would have to switch on a multiple of 10 A. (about 50 A.) and switch off 10 A. This performance is significantly reduced with the aid of the new circuit, as the following consideration shows.
When the two groups of lamps are connected in series to the power source and can be alternately short-circuited by a changeover switch, then burn in the middle position of the switch both groups in series; the current is then due to the known characteristics of the lamps 6.6 A. When a group is short-circuited, the Current doubles for a moment, that is to 13.2 A. to drop even to 10 A. When the switch is opened, the first instant is the cold one Group of lamps preceded by the others, which were just burning alone; the current therefore sinks in the first moment from 10 A. only to 8.3 A. and then while the switch is in the middle position is, by itself, to 6.6 A. This game is repeated on the other side and so on.
As you can see, the switch only has 13.2 less 6.6 A. each time, that is 6.6 A. switch on and switch off 10 less 8.3 A., that is 1.7 A. So he can do a lot be built weaker than with the usual circuit. Are in the same degree the power surges in the network are also reduced.
