Verfahren zur Herstellung gesättigter Fettsäuren aus ungesättigten FettsäurenProcess for the production of saturated fatty acids from unsaturated fatty acids
und deren Estern.and their esters.
Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 24. März 1911 ab.Patented in the German Empire on March 24, 1911.
There has been no lack of attempts in candle manufacture and other processes dropping oleic acid or converting its esters into solid saturated acids. the Hitherto published methods suffer more or less from the drawback that they only give a relatively low yield.
Magnier, Brangier and Tissier (patents 126446 and 132223) combined the sulfuric acid saponification of fats with electrolytic reduction. In their process. is z. B. the mass obtained by the action of sulfuric acid on oleic acid is mixed with five to six times the volume of water and subjected to the action of the electric current at 150 ° in the autoclave under a pressure of four to five atmospheres. The resulting stearic sulfuric acid is transformed smoothly into oxy-stearic acid at the high temperature, which cannot be further reduced. Only the proportions of oleic acid that remained unaffected by the action of the concentrated sulfuric acid are subject to the action of the current, but the hydrogenation does not achieve any appreciable amount given the extremely low solubility in water and depolarization of the oleic acid. Stearic sulfuric acid, as obtained from oleic acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, always contains free sulfuric acid. If the mass is now mixed with water according to the information in patent 126446, the latter immediately absorbs the free sulfuric acid. The result is a weakly acidic liquid in which stearic sulfuric acid, as has long been known, is insoluble. So even the parts of stearic sulfuric acid that are not immediately converted into oxystearic acid evade electroreduction because they are insoluble. For all of the reasons cited, it seems understandable why such poor yields can be achieved using the Magnier, Brangier and Tissier process.
It has now been found that good yields of stearic acid can be obtained if the sulfuric acid not bound by the oleic acid is removed from the action reaction product obtained from sulfuric acid to oleic acid is removed by washing and then the pure sulfonic acids of reduction without the application of pressure at moderate Temperature subjects. The sulphonic acids can be removed by the usual means, such as zinc dust, Reduce aluminum grits, sodium amalgam, iron and sulfuric acid etc. only poorly. On the other hand, it was found to be light and smooth with electrolytic hydrogen react.
This process stands out from the known hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids in alcoholic solution due to lower energy consumption; it can also be cheap Lead cathodes are used and there is no formation of fatty acid esters.
Im ersteren Falle erfolgt nur die Bildung von Stearinschwefelsäure, während im zweiten FalleIt is expedient to start from crude oleic acid or its triglyceride, which is then used for the treatment Subjected with sulfuric acid. In the former case only the formation of Stearic sulfuric acid, while in the second case

B. Blei.the fat is saponified at the same time, releasing glycerine. The sulphonic acids obtained are used directly or after dissolving them in a little hot water. Namely, they are soluble in water if once the excess sulfuric acid is removed. Sulfuric acid is used as the anode liquid, as electrode material z. B. lead.
There were 280 g of oleic acid or its triglyceride (olive oil) with 2 to 3 molecules 95 percent sulfuric acid mixed, taking care that the temperature did not rise above -j- 5 °. The crowd stayed after Mix well, stand in the cold for 24 hours, then pour ice-cold water washed out and dissolved after washing with 400 ecm of boiling water. These Solution served as catholyte; The anolyte is 30 percent sulfuric acid. Anode and Cathode compartment separates a diaphragm; appropriately shaped lead sheets were used as electrodes used (temperature 90 to 100 °). The catholyte was in streaming motion. . With an electricity yield of 50 to 75 percent can be applied to the cathodic current density of 0.25 to 1.00 amps Square decimeter surface convert 60 to 70 percent of the oleic acid into stearic acid, which is deposited in pure form after the electrolyte has cooled down.
As soon as about Y 5 of the calculated amount of electricity had been added, the fatty acids were insoluble in the aqueous electrolyte. They were siphoned off and again subjected to treatment with sulfuric acid, that is, converted again into sulfonic acids. After washing with cold water, they were dissolved in hot water and further electrolytically reduced. By repeating this intermediate treatment with sulfuric acid several times, a material yield of stearic acid of 98 percent can be achieved with an almost quantitative current yield.
While in Example I the stearic acid after washing in hot water was dissolved and served as an electrolyte in the form of this solution, one now uses the Stearic sulfuric acid after washing directly without a solvent as a catholyte. After the electrolysis was complete, the mass solidified to a smeary, black color Cake that is washed with water and then distilled, preferably in a stream of steam, was subjected. 85 to 90 percent solid, pure white material was obtained, which essentially contained stearic acid (melting point 62 to 63 °). The bath voltage was in both cases 2.5 to 3.0 volts.
