Der Apparat besteht im wesentlichen, aus einer dampfdicht geschlossenen, metallenen Büchse, deren Deckel aufgeschliffen und mit einer Schraube s versehen ist, welche eine Bleidichtung hat. Durch den Dampfraum a, in welchen beim Arbeiten der Dampfmaschine der Dampf aus den Cylindern oder Schiebertasten tritt, wird die Temperatur des in der Vase befindlichen Oeles oder Fettes auf die Temperatur des Dampfes, d. i. auf 120—i6o° C. gebracht, infolge dessen kann der Dampf sich nicht condensiren, sondern er sammelt sich durch seine Expansionskraft das dünnflüssig gewordene OeI oder Fett durchdringend, am höchsten Punkte der Vase und drückt von dort bei jedem Kolbenspiele eine gewisse Quantität Fett in den Cylinder oder Schieberkasten. Arbeitet die Maschine ohne Dampf, wie z. B. die Locomotiven auf Gefällen, so condensirt sich nach und nach der in der Vase enthaltene Dampf und sinkt durch das Fett auf den tiefsten Punkt der Vase. Dabei verringert sich sein Volumen aus bekannter physikalischer Ursache auf den iooosten bis i6oosten Theil und es sind somit nur 1 bis 2 Tropfen Wasser vorhanden. Da beim Leergange des Kolbens sich im Cylinder luftverdünnte Räume bilden, so tritt eine Saugwirkung ein und infolge dessen gelangt das Fett in den Cylinder oder Schieberkasten. Die Quantität des zur Schmierung erforderlichen Oeles oder Fettes kann durch die Schraube d genau nach Bedarf regulirt werden, indem beim Lüften der Schraube ein ringförmiger Raum entsteht, durch welchen das OeI treten mufs und dessen Querschnitt man um minimale Theile vergröfsern oder verkleinern kann.
