The production of carbonate of ammonia is now generally carried out in such a way that that initially on a wet route by introducing carbonic acid into an aqueous carbonic acid ammonia solution sparingly soluble double carbonic acid ammonia is deposited. This salt is dried and then heated in sublimation pans; in the cylinders above the pans sublimed carbonate of ammonia separates. This process involves large, expensive equipment; aside from that it is always associated with a relatively large loss of ammonia (around 30 percent). Attempts have also been made to produce carbonic acid ammonia by directing the gases carbonic acid and ammonia together in the presence of water vapor, but these attempts have proven in practice not proven, since the combination of the gases carbonic acid and ammonia to form solid, carbonic acid Ammonia was very slow, so that enormous rooms and a lot of time were necessary to establish a stable sales

In accordance with the present invention, relatively very small spaces become large ones Obtained quantities of salable carbonate of ammonia. The procedure becomes expedient carried out as follows: The gases, ammonia, carbonic acid and water vapor are in the ratio as they are present in sublimed ammonium carbonate, together passed through a relatively narrow, preferably iron pipe. The pipe is strongly heated from the outside, so that the exiting gases have a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the carbonate of ammonia. The hot gases heated in this way are now passed into a sublimation chamber that is cooled from the outside while at the same time To increase the cooling, cooled plates can be hung in the chamber. The precipitation and the formation of solid, carbonic acid ammonia takes place immediately at Entry of the gases into the sublimation chamber and with simultaneous cooling below 60 ° instead of. The carbonic acid ammonia then separates in the form of thick crusts the walls and the suspended cooling surfaces.
Of course you can use the ammonia, the carbonic acid and the water vapor for yourself heat and allow to act on each other in a heated state.
A method has already become known in which, for the purpose of illustration from ammonium carbonate to glowing mixtures of water vapor and ammonia in a shaft furnace Carbonate mixtures are brought into action and then cooled. With this one The use of a shaft furnace is unnecessary, even impossible, a simple procedure heated pipe is sufficient. The present method also differs from the earlier one essentially through the temperature used,
In contrast, according to the previously known method, a much higher (approximately four to five times) temperature is an indispensable condition. Ammonia is supposed to be passed through a red-hot layer of carbonate, which not only releases its carbonic acid, but also heats the ammonia and generates water vapor. But in order for the carbonate to be able to fulfill all these purposes perfectly, it must be heated above the temperature at which it gives off its carbonic acid, i.e. over 800 to 900 0 , practically to about 1000 0 . Herein lies the superiority of the present process compared to the previous one, which, because of its enormous heat consumption, has to fail for economic reasons for large-scale operations. But the two also differ significantly in operational terms. In the earlier process it is impossible to bring the gases together in an adjustable manner in such a way that individual components are heated approximately in proportion to the end product. As is well known, the expulsion of carbonic acid from carbonates in the glowing heat is a process which depends on so many moments that a steady flow of carbonic acid cannot be achieved. It is therefore also not possible with the earlier method to regulate the individual components against one another in such a way that a commercially available carbonate of ammonia with an ammonia content which can be varied as desired can be achieved as the end product. If one adds that, as noted at the beginning, a complicated shaft furnace system is required for the previously known process, while a simple heated pipe is sufficient for the present process, and that gaseous carbonic acid is far cheaper and easier to obtain elsewhere than on the in the previous method of heating carbonates, the great economic and technical difference between the present method and the previous one must be recognized.
