Abstract
Tipped cigarettes are continuously tested for airtightness on a drum with grooves which moves the cigarettes through a back pressure chamber in which a sealing pressure equal to the test pressure is maintained. The test pressure is applied to the ends of the cigarettes through rubber cups, and the pressure loss caused by the flow through the cigarettes is measured and used as an indication for the quality of the cigarettes and filter covering. This achieves a better seal of the test air entrance and of a cigarette; it prevents rejecting a cigarette as imperfect if the seal was merely affected by a tobacco shred.
