Abstract

Cigarette filter raw material, e.g. a paper compsn. or fibrous material, contains 5-40(12.5) wt. % admixed comminuted or finely ground pine wood bark, esp. fir wood back. Filter has (i) increased retention capacity for polycyclic tar hydrocarbons, whether carcinogenic or not; (ii) high filtering power for nicotine and its oxidn. products and does not reduce taste or enjoyment of tobacco; and (iii) filter material takes up but little water, so that filter does not become over-satd. with moisture; (iv) prodn. costs are low, as pine wood bark is widely available as waste.

The invention relates to a cigarette filter for removing substances that are harmful in cigarette smoke to be viewed as.
