In the old method the crude product is treated with charcoal or bone charcoal either before or during rectification, which is very costly, since the charcoal is comparatively very expensive, and yet can only be used a few times. The rectification itself has hitherto been carried out in such a way that the lower bladder A is filled with alcohol and water, and the mass is then heated by steam. In this manipulation average time until the rectification is in progress, i _^3/4 to 2 hours; then work is continued until the contents of the apparatus are de-flooded. If wine spirit is to be produced, the spirit thus obtained must be driven off again in the manner just described.

As a result of this, the alcohols, which are difficult to volatilize, and very difficult to volatilize, cannot rise very high into the columns, and the so-called over-ripening of heavy vapors is excluded.
