To the 2-phenyl-3 - (/ i-dimethylamino-propionyl) -benzofuran hydrochloride (hereinafter referred to as test substance) with the other substances To be able to, the relative effectiveness was determined according to the following formula:

J.Schmutz in Pharmaceutica Acta Helvetiae, Bd. 48, S. 117 [1973]).It has been found that the substance according to the invention has valuable psychopharmacological properties owns. The animal experiments showed a spectrum of activity that is reflected in the typical test arrangements with that of the clinically used antidepressants. So far will be Benzofuran derivatives in therapy for the treatment of cardiovascular problems (see for example E. B e 1 e.g. F. W. S c h m a h 1 and H. H e η s e 1 in Arzneimittelforschung, Vol. 14, p. 1319 [1969]) or as uric acid-lowering preparations in the treatment of gout (see N. Zollner and W. G rö b η e r in Pharmaceutical Research, Vol. 21, p. 1500 [1971]) is used. Observation of an antidepressant effect with the substance according to the invention is therefore surprising, especially if one takes into account that hitherto predominantly compounds with tricyclically fused ring systems for the treatment of depressive states can be used in humans (see J. Schmutz in Pharmaceutica Acta Helvetiae, Vol. 48, p. 117 [1973]).

Suitable solvents are, for example, aliphatic alcohols with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, preferably ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. The amine component is expediently added in the form of a salt, for example the hydrochloride. You can also add additional acid, such as hydrogen chloride, which can be dissolved in the aliphatic alcohol used. The formaldehyde can take effect in the form of a concentrated aqueous solution, as paraformaldehyde or trioxane.
To purify the process product, the acid addition salts can be in a solvent such as lower alcohols, dissolve and precipitate again with ether. It is also possible to use the acid addition salt to convert into the free base, this with a suitable solvent, for. B. extract ether, and stir it back into the desired salt.

The production of the acid addition salts concerned happens in the usual way. One can, for example, the ethereal solution of the base with the alcoholic Add a solution of an appropriate acid, such as hydrochloric acid, whereby the acid addition salt, in this case the hydrochloride separates out in crystalline form. Eine eventuell erforderliche Reinigung des Salzes kann dadurch erfolgen, daß man es in Äthanol löst, mit dem 3fachen Volumen trockenen Äthers versetzt und nach guter Kühlung absaugt.20 g of 2-phenyl-3-acetylbenzofuran were dissolved in 60 ml of isopropanol, and 3.6 g of paraformaldehyde and 9.7 g of dimethylamine hydrochloride were added to this solution. It was refluxed for 12 hours. then the isopropanol is distilled off in vacuo and 100 ml of water and 20 ml of 10% hydrochloric acid are added to the residue. To remove undissolved parts, extraction was carried out with ether and the ether extract was separated off. The aqueous acidic solution of the hydrochloride was made alkaline with 5% sodium hydroxide solution and the deposited oily base was taken up in ether. After drying the ethereal solution over sodium sulphate, a solution of hydrogen chloride in ethanol was added in excess, whereupon the hydrochloride of 2-phenyl-3- (β- dimethylamino-propionyl) -benzofuran separated out in crystalline form. F. = 148 to 150 C. The yield was 14.5 g. Any necessary cleaning of the salt can be done by dissolving it in ethanol, adding 3 times the volume of dry ether and, after good cooling, suctioning off.
To prepare the maleic acid salt, equimolar amounts of the base and maleic acid were dissolved separately in ether and the solutions were combined. The maleic acid salt separated out in white crystals. F. = 127 to 128 0 C (from ethanol).
