The subject of the present invention is a damper for string instruments, which is attached to the instrument in such a way that it can be activated or released without losing any beats during the transition from forte to piano con sordino . In contrast to the hitherto customary dampers attached to the instrument, the damper encompasses the web c from both sides in a clamp-like manner in such a way that the two jaws α and β ¹ , displaceable in the horizontal direction, can be brought closer to the web or removed from it.
