und Formaldehyd.and formaldehyde.
Patentiert im Deutschen Reiche vom 16. April 1907 ab.Patented in the German Empire on April 16, 1907.
In Hager's Pharmazeutisch-technisches Manuale, 7. In Hager's Pharmaceutical-Technical Manual, 7th edition (1903), page 709, it is mentioned that the action of formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid on raw cresol receives a reaction product that can be used as a shellac substitute, However, numerous tests carried out on a large scale have shown that practical use This product fails as a shellac substitute due to the fact that the product treated objects, in particular the furniture painted with them, an adhesive show an extremely unpleasant odor. It has now been found that you can get a product that does not have this defect and an excellent substitute for shellac, if you can instead of raw cresol, pure o-cresol is used. This result was unforeseeable since It is well known that pure o-cresol also has an intense and very unpleasant odor owns.
Das so erhaltene Harz wird darauf durch Waschen mit Wasser oder durch längeres Behandeln mit Wasserdampf gereinigt.10 parts of o-cresol with 7 parts of a 40 percent formaldehyde solution and 10 parts water brought together, ο ,, parts concentrated hydrochloric acid added and the so obtained mixture heated for several hours with stirring. The resin thus obtained is then cleaned by washing with water or by prolonged treatment with steam.
The new wine-yellow to light brown colored resin dissolves in dilute alkalis, is very easily soluble in methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, ether, carbon disulfide, acetylene tetrachloride and chloroform, somewhat soluble in benzene, dichlorohydrin and terpineol, sparingly soluble in gasoline and carbon tetrachloride and insoluble in carbon Turpentine oil, fatty oils such as linseed oil and acids. When heated to about 90 degrees, the new product begins to soften and melted at 110-120 0th In the same way as natural shellac is used, both when painting and polishing on wood, iron, etc., there is a quick-drying, brilliantly luminous coating.
If a smaller amount of formaldehyde is used in the example, a softer one becomes Product received. Instead of hydrochloric acid, other acids can also be used.
