Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Betrieb von Flammenionisati
onsdetektoren und die Verwendung von sauerstoffhaltigen Gasgemi
schen für Flammenionisationsdetektoren.
Flammenionisationsdetektoren (FID) sind Detektoren, die in der Ga
schromatographie eingesetzt werden. Das Meßprinzip des Flammenio
nisationsdetektors beruht auf der Verbrennung von organischen Verbin
dungen in einer Wasserstoff-Luft-Flamme, wobei ein Ionenstrom ge
messen wird. Flammenionisationsdetektoren sind in "C.F. Poole und
S.k. Poole, Chromatography today, Verlag Elsevier, Amsterdam 1991,
Seite 260-264" beschrieben.
Die DDR-Patentschrift DD 95 293 beschreibt ein Meßverfahren für die
Gaschromatographie, wobei Sauerstoff dem Trägergas zugesetzt und
der Paramagnetismus des Sauerstoffs zur Messung ausgenutzt wird.
Überraschend wurde gefunden, daß die Meßempfindlichkeit von Flam
menionisationsdetektoren durch Verwendung eines Gasgemisches, das
einen Sauerstoffgehalt im Bereich von 25 bis 50 Volumenprozent, ins
besondere 40 bis 45 Volumenprozent, enthält, statt der üblicherweise
eingesetzten Luft, erheblich gesteigert werden kann.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist somit ein Verfahren zum Betrieb von
Flammenionisationsdetektoren, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß an Stelle
von Luft ein Gasgemisch, das 25 bis 50 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff ent
hält, eingesetzt wird.
Weiterhin ist ein Gegenstand der Erfindung die Verwendung von einem
Gasgemisch, das 25 bis 50 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff enthält, zum
Betrieb von Flammenionisationsdetektoren an Stelle von Luft.
Das Gasgemisch, das für Flammenionisationsdetektoren eingesetzt
wird, besteht im allgemeinen aus Sauerstoff und Stickstoff, das heißt 25
bis 50 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff und 75 bis 50 Volumenprozent Stick
stoff. Statt Stickstoff können auch andere inerte Gase wie Edelgase
oder Gemische von inerten Gasen verwendet werden. Geeignete Edel
gase sind beispielsweise Helium, Argon, Krypton und Xenon. Ein oder
mehrere Edelgase können auch im Gemisch mit Stickstoff im Gasge
misch enthalten sein.
Mit steigendem Sauerstoffgehalt des Gasgemisches nimmt die Empfind
lichkeit von Flammenionisationsdetektoren zu. Ein Sauerstoffgehalt von
über 50 Volumenprozent im Gasgemisch führt zu einer Schädigung der
Meßelektroden und wird daher nicht empfohlen.
Die größte Empfindlichkeitssteigerung bei Flammenionisationsdetekto
ren wird mit Gasgemischen mit einem Sauerstoffgehalt im Bereich von
35 bis 45 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff erreicht. Besonders geeignet für
den Betrieb von Flammenionisationsdetektoren sind daher Gasgemi
sche mit einem Sauerstoffgehalt im Bereich von 35 bis 45 Volumenpro
zent Sauerstoff.
Die Gasgemische sind besonders vorteilhaft zu verwenden bei aliphati
schen oder aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen wie Alkane (z. B. Pro
pan, Butan, Pentan, Hexan, Heptan, Octan, Nonan oder Decan) oder
einkernige Aromaten (z. B. Benzol, Toluol, Xylol) als Probe.
Die Verwendung der Gasgemische erhöht die Nachweisgrenze von
Flammenionisationsdetektoren für organische Verbindungen. So ist zum
Beispiel der Nachweis von Aromaten wie Benzol, Toluol oder Xylol im
Bereich von 20 bis 1000 ppb (je Komponente in Stickstoff; ppb be
zeichnet Volumenkonzentration, d. h. ppb = 1 : 109 Volumenanteile) oh
ne Anreicherungssystem bei der gaschromatographischen Analyse
möglich.
Die Empfindlichkeitssteigerung des Flammenionisationsdetektoren bei
Einsatz der Gasgemische liegt im allgemeinen in einem Bereich von 30
bis 100% bezogen auf die Empfindlichkeit bei Einsatz von Luft oder
synthetischer Luft. In entsprechendem Maße wird die Nachweisempfind
lichkeit (Nachweisgrenze) des Flammenionisationsdetektors gesteigert.
In den folgenden Beispielen 1 bis 3 wird die Meßempfindlichkeit des
Flammenionisationsdetektors mit folgenden Proben bei der gaschroma
tographischen Trennung verglichen:
Beispiel 1) 5,0 ppm Propan in Stickstoff,
Beispiel 2) 1,5 ppm Propan in Stickstoff,
Beispiel 3) 270 ppb Benzol; 270 ppb Toluol; 270 ppb Xylol; in Stickstoff.

Es werden gaschromatographische Trennungen einer Probenart (5
ppm Propan in Stickstoff) mit verschiedenen FID-Gasgemischen und
unter sonst gleichen Bedingungen durchgeführt. Das Signal des Flam
menionisationsdetektors der Versuche wird verglichen. Das Detektorsi
gnal bei Verwendung von synthetischer Luft als Gasgemisch wird gleich
100 Prozent gesetzt. Die Volumenkonzentration der Proben wird in den
Einheiten ppm (1 : 106 Volumenanteile) oder ppb (1 : 109 Volumenanteile)
angegeben.

Claims (8)
1. Verfahren zum Betrieb von Flammenionisationsdetektoren, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß an Stelle von Luft ein Gasgemisch, das 25 bis 50
Volumenprozent Sauerstoff enthält, eingesetzt wird.
2. Verfahren gemäß Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch 35 bis 45 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff enthält.
3. Verwendung von einem Gasgemisch, das 25 bis 50 Volumenprozent
Sauerstoff enthält, zum Betrieb von Flammenionisationsdetektoren an
Stelle von Luft.
4. Verwendung gemäß Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch 35 bis 45 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff enthält.
5. Verwendung gemäß Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch mindestens ein Inertgas enthält.
6. Verwendung gemäß Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch Stickstoff und/oder ein oder mehrere Edelgase enthält.
7. Verwendung gemäß Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch 35 bis 45 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff und 65 bis 55 Volu
menprozent eines Inertgases enthält.
8. Verwendung gemäß Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das
Gasgemisch 35 bis 45 Volumenprozent Sauerstoff und 65 bis 55 Volu
menprozent Stickstoff enthält.
