Description
So-called »milking systems« are often used to produce radioactive Ba-137m from Cs-137 or isotope generators.
One method is based on the fixation of the cesium on Dowex-50 and the elution of the Ba-137m with EDTA. It has the disadvantage that the mother nuclide Cs-137 breaks through after a relatively small number of milking operations, whereby the purity of the separated Ba-137m is reduced. A second method is based on the application of the high selectivity of ammonium molybdate phosphate (AMP) for cesium. This milking system also only has a limited service life. Within about 100 milking operations the decontamination factor falls by more than a power of ten from about 10 5 to 3 · 10 3 , after 200 milking operations to about 10 3 . Another disadvantage is that both milking systems require eluents with relatively high salt concentrations.
Because of the long half-life of the Cs-137, it is desirable to have a longer life generator available. It has already been proposed to use titanium hexacyanoferrate to fix the cesium. The decontamination factor of this generator remains unchanged for about half a year (about 10 s ), but the barium yield is relatively low (a few percent) and falls steadily with the age of the generator. The reason for this lies in the diffusion of the cesium ions into the interior of the titanium hexacyanoferrate, which means that the barium produced by the radioactive decay also evades elution.
According to the invention, a generator substance has been developed which allows it without special safety measures to separate the short-lived Ba-137m from Cs-137. The milking process should take a long time can be carried out repeatedly throughout. In addition, the eluent used should be used Contain as few foreign salts as possible.
The generator substance according to the invention consists of a framework substance or a carrier substance, the surface of which is covered with a thin layer of iron hexacyanoferrate. As a carrier substance can you can use all materials known for this technique, such as B. Plastics; deserves the privilege but a support made of iron or steel in the form of grains, balls, sawdust, etc. and in particular a support made of steel alloys such as V2A steel.
The generator substance according to the invention is used to fix the mother nuclide Cs-137. Since the iron hexacyanoferrate-layer is very thin, a diffusion of cesium is avoided in the grain interior, ensuring a good yield of Ba-137m, eluting with 10 ~ 3 HCL. The generator obtained in this way has a practically unlimited service life, can be eluted very quickly and supplies Ba-137m with a decontamination factor greater than 10 6 . The yield is between 40 and 80%. A milking system of the type described has been in operation for about 1 year; after more than 6000 milking operations, no decrease in performance could be ascertained.
The deficiencies described in the known prior art are alleviated by the generator substance according to the invention Fixed.
Der Generator hat eine praktisch unbegrenzte Lebensdauer.40 g of V 2 Α steel sawdust with a grain size of 100 to 300 mesh are heated to about 50 ° C. with 40 ml of 0.5 molar K 3 Fe (CN) 6 solution and 80 ml of 1N HCl are added dropwise. The chips slowly turn blue. The supernatant, cloudy solution is poured off, the preparation washed well and dried. The product is well suited for filling columns and is stable against dilute hydrochloric acid (tested against 10 ~ 2 N HCL) when shaken gently. The capacity of the preparation for Cs is about 10 ~ 2 meq / g. The product is loaded with Cs-137 with gentle shaking and filled into an exchange column which contains some unloaded preparation. The Ba-137m is eluted with 5 ml of 10 -3 N HCl at a flow rate of 5 ml / min. After about half an hour, the operation can be repeated with the same yield. The generator has a practically unlimited service life.
