Attempts have therefore been made to combine phenol directly with bromine
Implement pentabromophenol. One way to do this is in the Journal of Chemical Education,
20, p. 117 (1943). In a two-step process, phenol is mixed with bromine
first converted to tribromophenol, this is then melted and, after the addition of
finely powdered iron as a catalyst by adding more bromine from it, pentabromophenol
won. This is about twenty times the theoretically required amount of bromine
used. The resulting crude product is separated off in the usual way, washed,
dried and optionally recrystallized from glacial acetic acid.
Phenol gewonnen werden, dazu sind jedoch zwei getrennte Verfahrensstufen erforderlich;
After this process, the end product can be made directly
Phenol can be obtained, but this requires two separate process steps;
Above all, however, the large excess of bromine is disadvantageous, since the bromine only with the
hydrogen bromide formed at the same time is released again when mixed.
So a special cleaning stage must be switched on,
which are combined with the corresponding expenditure on equipment and, above all, with energy requirements
is to separate the excess bromine from hydrogen bromide and each of the two gases
to win for yourself purely.
There is also already known a method according to which pentabromophenol
obtained by direct bromination of phenol in oleum. If this procedure
can also be carried out in a single stage, then here too is an important one
Excess bromine required, which must be recovered, and the yields achieved
are only a little over 80% of theory.
umsetzt. In order to avoid these aforementioned disadvantages, a method has been developed
for the production of pentabromophenol and gaseous hydrogen bromide from phenol and
Bromine, optionally at elevated temperature and in the presence of catalysts,
developed, which is characterized in that one phenol and bromine
in molar ratio
from 1: 5 to at most 1: 5.5 in the presence of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons
with 2 to 6 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof at temperatures of 20 to 140 C with one another
implements.
reines Produkt in fast theoretischer Menge an.
This process is described as follows: Phenol as a starting material
is dissolved in a solvent consisting of a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon,
for example dibromethane, chlorobromoethane, dibromopropane, chlorobromopropane, dibromobutane,
Chlorobromobutane, dibromoisobutane, or chlorobromoisobutane, or a mixture of the two
or more such halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons and,
optionally after addition of a catalyst, with introduced bromine for reaction
brought. Iron or aluminum powder or
their salts or iodine are used. The bromine can both after complete
Dissolution of the phenol initiated as well as simultaneously with the phenol in the solvent
to be introduced. It is only used with a small excess of bromine of about 2 to 100 /,
worked. While the first half of the amount of bromine is being introduced, the temperature
be increased from about 40 to 80 "C, towards the end of the introduction, the reaction mixture
heated to about 140 "C. After the end of the reaction, the pentabromophenol formed
has deposited, the excess bromine by passing in olefins, for example
Ethylene, propylene, butylene or isobutylene removed; the dibromoalkane formed in the process
can be reused as a solvent and therefore remains in the reaction mixture.
The hydrogen bromide formed in the reaction is collected and carried away by it
Purified bromine residues by charging it with phosphorous acid via a
Wash tower or other suitable washing device directs. He then falls as
pure product in an almost theoretical amount. The pentabromophenol is used in usual
Way separated from the solvent, washed and dried. The incurred
Mother liquor can be used for new approaches.
A process has thus been found that eliminates the disadvantages of the previous
avoids known processes and allows pentabromophenol to be used directly
from phenol and bromine in a single process step. Though only one
small excess of bromine is required, which can be recovered almost completely
can, but yields of pentabromophenol of about 94 to 98 0 / o of theory
achieved. The hydrogen bromide formed as a by-product falls without additional
Energy expenditure in largely pure form with almost 1000 /, the yield.
