KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The technical use of pinene hydrochloride (also hydrochloric turpentine oil or called artificial camphor) has so far failed mainly because the in the way that has been customary up to now, the product cannot be kept permanently neutral if not disproportionately costly and unfavorable cleaning methods are used become, such as B. multiple recrystallization from alcohol. The formation of Acids when storing the pinene hydrochloride prepared in the known manner is primarily caused by the presence of by-products which regularly arise during the presentation, which easily split off hydrogen chloride, while pinene hydrochloride itself is a relatively stable body, which only becomes energetic at a higher temperature and through effective means is broken down to a considerable extent. The repeated suggestion by neutralizing the free acid present with alkalis and thereafter The aim of distillation or sublimation is not to obtain a usable preparation because it only removes what is present at the time of treatment Free acid could be obtained, while free hydrochloric acid was formed by decomposition of the by-products during storage was not avoided at all or was completely imperfectly and insufficiently avoided. The present procedure, which the The aim is to achieve pinene hydrochloride that remains neutral when stored on the new observation that the byproducts, which easily split off hydrogen chloride, which adhere to the pinene hydrochloride from the representation and the cause of the defective . Shelf life of the product can be eliminated by careful saponification. According to this new observation The present process consists in the fact that the raw or any pre-cleaned Subjecting pinene hydrochloride to the action of saponifying agents by applying such conditions to the action retains that only the by-products are decomposed, and sufficiently completely, but the pinene hydrochloride remains largely unaffected. To realize, Simple counter-attempts can be made to ensure that the pinene hydrochloride is not significantly attacked Start with pure material. If another purification is allowed to follow, it is sufficient to carry out the saponification to such an extent that the end product is not unsaponified Has more shares.
Man arbeitet vorteilhaft bei Temperaturen zwischen 80 bis 1000C. undThe known saponifying agents can be used for the present process. Primarily water, dilute acids, alkalis, alkaline earths and carbonates of the alkalis and alkaline earths come into consideration. The temperature is expediently chosen so high that the crude pinene hydrochloride used is completely liquefied. At a low temperature, the saponification tends to be incomplete or takes too long. It is advantageous to work at temperatures between 80 to 100 ° C. and
Das Ende der Operation kann beispielsweise daran erkanntpromotes the action by intimate mixing by means of a stirrer or similar ways Due to the volatility of the product, closed containers are recommended. The applicable Quantities vary depending on the nature of the raw product and are easily determined by the expert in individual cases to investigate. The end of the operation can be recognized from it, for example
It is better to measure the saponification number in the usual way on a sample that is not too small to determine and to compare it with that of the pure pinene hydrochloride, the is determined once and for all under the same saponification conditions.
The pure pinene hydrochloride is in and of itself among those for the determination of Saponification numbers under normal conditions are not absolutely invariable, but will be gradual dismantled to a small extent. So one finds a certain, albeit very small, consumption of alkali, which is dependent is not neglected by the test conditions and when working precisely allowed.
Example: Boil 5 g of pure pinene ■ that has been recrystallized several times from alcohol hydrochloride with a measured amount of non-carbonated normal liquor and one for Solution of sufficient measured amount of alcohol for 30 minutes on the water bath on the reflux condenser, cools, diluted with a measured amount of pure non-carbonated Water and titrated with normal acid using phenolphthalein as an indicator. From consumption the normal alkali is used to calculate the values for the chosen test conditions in the usual way valid saponification number of the pure pinene hydrochloride.
The saponification number of the material to be processed is then determined exactly under the same conditions Product. The latter is used to calculate the amount of soda solution of any concentration required for saponification. An apparatus with a heating jacket and a gas discharge pipe is used to carry out the saponification and agitator or other device suitable for mixing liquids is provided. In this apparatus is used to bring the crude product and a little more than that calculated as above Amount of soda solution.
If, for example, the determination of the saponification number results in a consumption of 10 mg KOH for ι g of crude product, about 40 kg or approx. 40 kg are used per 100 kg of crude product. . more of 5 percent soda solution.
The mixture is stirred while warming to 80 to 100 ° C. until a removed, The sample freed from adhering soda by washing and centrifuged does not give a higher saponification number than pure pinene hydrochloride. If this point is after the application of 40 kg of substance reached about 12 to 24 hours, ■ the mixture is allowed to separate, separate and wash the product in the usual way.
The product obtained in the manner described will retain if stored carefully its neutral reaction for a long time.
A disadvantage of this is that it contains significant amounts of oily bodies, which lower the melting point and impair the technical usability.
The removal of the oily bodies by distillation, sublimation or mechanical Deposition is unsatisfactory because on the one hand the boiling point and volatility of the Oils differ only a little from those of the main product, while on the other hand a great mutual solubility of the pinene hydrochloride and the oils are present.
So while the methods mentioned, applied on their own, incur considerable losses conditional on pure material, it has been inclined that the separation of the oily by-products almost completely by distillation with steam or sublimation with a good yield of pinene hydrochloride succeeds if the oily bodies are chemically modified in a suitable manner so that their volatility for themselves or with water vapors is relatively very low. Such a change leaves are achieved on the basis of the observation that the oily bodies mentioned are not very stable are organic compounds, which are strongly acting due to the known for this purpose Agents, especially those of acidic character, easily become almost completely resinified suffer. When performing the resinification, the conditions are again to be chosen so that an appreciable effect of the agents used on the pinene hydrochloride does not take place.
Man erwärmt z. B. the saponified product or the separated in any way therefrom oily fractions with sulfuric acid of approximately 1.5 specific gravity Stir to 80 to 100 ° C. The duration of the action depends on the oil content of the Product, the amount and concentration of acid and the intensity of the mixing and can easily be determined by experiment. Then the acid will do it separate product neutralized, for example, with soda and distilled with steam. Instead of sulfuric acid, one can use
B. die Schwefelsäure, wirken dann auf das verwendete Rohproduktborrowed the same success, for example, use phosphoric acid, but one is already the Prefer sulfuric acid for the sake of cheapness. With the resinification of the oily components the operation of saponification can be combined in such a way that saponification and resinification are effected at the same time. the resinifying agents, e.g. B. the sulfuric acid, then act on the raw product used
ίο zugleich verseifend und verharzend. Die Vereinigung der Operationen führt aber insofern einen Übelstand mit sich, als infolge des unvermeidlichen Auftretens von freier Salzsäure die Apparate leicht angegriffen werden.ίο at the same time saponifying and resinifying. The Union The operations, however, entail an inconvenience insofar as as a result of the The inevitable occurrence of free hydrochloric acid can easily attack the apparatus.
In most cases it will therefore be advantageous to keep the reaction mixture alkaline or neutral for the saponification and the resinification of the oils by means of sulfuric acid.
In all cases can if a pure product of white color and high Melting point is desired, a further purification according to the known methods, such as distillation, sublimation and the like follow.
To the saponification of the by-products contained in the crude pinene hydrochloride pursue, were inter alia. the comparative tests described in the following were carried out.
The saponification number was determined by boiling 5 to 10 g of substance for 15 minutes with 50 ecm alcohol and a measured amount of 1 J 2 normal alkali, adding 50 ecm water and back-titrating with 1 f 2 normal hydrochloric acid. The consumption of 1 I 2 standard solution was converted to mg KOH for ι g of substance. The value found in this way is called the "saponification number".
