Description

Siliuate zinc dust paint with a particularly long "pot life", characterized in that, in addition to the usual components, it contains approx. 1% propyl diglycol (= dietethylene glycol monopropyl ether), calculated on the total weight. Icat zinc dust paints usually consist of approx. 70 - 75 cirrus, deaf and alkali silicates, water and, if necessary, small amounts of wetting agents and suspending agents. Sodium, potassium and lithium silicates can be used in aqueous solution, both alone and in mixtures. It is necessary to store the liquid components and the zinc dust separately until processing, as after the two components have been mixed together, the resulting paint, which is suitable for painting or spraying, only has a limited "pot life". As is well known, "pot life" is understood to mean the time in which a color mixed from the individual components can be processed properly. After this time has elapsed, paints of this type in the container become grainy and finally solid as chemical reactions take place between the components. It is generally desirable that the "pot life" of two-component systems is not too short, since otherwise difficulties and material losses can arise during processing. It has now been found that small additions of propyl diglycol to a silicate zinc dust paint extend its "pot life" many times over without adversely affecting the quality of the paints. A side effect of such additives is an improved spreadability of the paints and a significant reduction in the tendency to form sediments. Silicate zinc dust paints, which differ in composition only because of the addition of propyl diglycol, were compared with regard to their "pot life"; Example I. 21.5 parts by weight of potash water glass approx. 35 Be 7 - t '11 Water 7-1.5 zinc dust 100 parts by weight of silicate zinc dust color I Example II 21.5 parts by weight of potash water glass, about 35 B: 6, - "" water 1, - propyl diglyc .. 71.5 "" zinc dust 100 parts by weight of silicate zinc dust color Il The paints were filled in polyethylene containers, hermetically sealed and stored at room temperature (+ 22-240 C). Their condition was checked daily. After three days, sample I began to become grainy, after five days it was hard and completely unusable. Sample II, on the other hand, remained processable for 20 days under the same conditions and only then became gritty.
