Es wurde gefunden, daß die Nucleinsäuren (sowohl animalischen als auch vegetabilischen Ursprungs) sowie deren phosphorsä'urehaltige Abbauprodukte, wie z. B. die Nucleothyminsäure und die Thyminsäure, die Eigenschaft besitzen, sich direkt mit Formaldehyd zu verbinden. Die so erhältlichen neuen Körper bilden gelblich weiße bis braune, unzersetzt haltbare Pulver, deren Alkalisalze in Wasser leicht löslich sind. Die wässerigen Lösungen der Salze sind in der Kälte ebenfalls beständig, dieselben spalten jedoch beim Erwärmen auf dem Wasserbade Formaldehyd ab.
