The presence of ellagic acid in Dividivi, Algarobilla and other materials containing tannin has been known for a long time; the methods used so far to obtain the acid from these raw materials are extremely inadequate and do not meet the requirements that are placed on technical processes is justified. According to Barth and Goldschmidt (reports, vol. N, p. 846), for the purpose of extraction of the ellagic acid from Dividivi, the crushed pods are digested with cold alcohol are and so on. In practice, however, there are processes according to which the ellagic acid is Raw materials should be removed by means of alcohol, not applicable because of the large The acid is poorly soluble in alcohol. Cobenzl (MONTHS FOR CHEMISTRY 1, 671) recommends to digest the powdered pods with water for a few days, the solution to evaporate with the addition of sulfuric acid to the syrup and then with boiling water to move, whereby the ellagic acid precipitates. This procedure has the disadvantage, first of all, that as a result of the addition of sulfuric acid to the aqueous extract to be evaporated, the after Deposition of the ellagic acid remaining extract is no longer usable while otherwise it forms a valuable by-product. Furthermore, it is very inefficient in order to obtain ellagic acid from the aqueous extract, the latter only up to the syrup to evaporate and then to add boiling water again. Because it was found that when boiling down an aqueous tannin extract containing ellagic acid the acid changes from the amorphous to the crystalline state and in this form is absolutely insoluble in the liquid when it has reached a density of 1.2, so that it is can be completely isolated with ease by flinging off or sucking off. the Observation that when the aqueous ellagic acid solution boils down to a very definite concentration the acid precipitates out crystalline and completely, is not yet known and important for the extraction of acid from its raw materials. Will if the indicated concentration is substantially exceeded, then the isolation of the acid offers from the syrup again certain difficulty due to difficult filtration of the latter.
The process of recovery of ellagic acid, which is the subject of the present invention is formed as follows: The raw materials containing the acid are extracted first with boiling water, boil the extract obtained to the specific gravity of about 1.2 and isolate the crystallized one Acid by suction or centrifugation.
