PATENTSCHRIFTPATENT LETTERING
KLASSEGREAT
Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 33. Mai 1901 ab.Patented in the German Empire on May 33, 1901.
A method is known by which raised decorations on wood, leather, and the like are produced in such a way that those parts which are to stand out are covered in a suitable manner and the uncovered areas are exposed to the action of concentrated sulfuric acid.
. Since the covering agent used in this process is completely impermeable to sulfuric acid, it is obvious that gradations in the depth of the places to be etched cannot be produced. To remedy this inconvenience is the purpose of the present invention. The procedure is as follows: The lifelike relief with its correct elevations and depressions is applied with a brush to wood, leather and the like with the help of a solution of about 1 part of asphalt and about 2 parts of rubber in benzene and then it is dissolved the dry coating concentrate sulfuric acid act. Since this coating is attacked by the sulfuric acid, the latter also acts on the wooden base underneath it, and indeed, assuming a certain etching time, with a strength which is in the wrong proportion to the thickness of the coating. The areas covered with a thinner layer are therefore attacked more strongly than those covered with a thicker layer, while the exposed areas are most strongly attacked by the sulfuric acid and those areas covered with a sufficiently thick layer are not attacked at all.
After leaching out the excess acid in the wood with water the procedure can be repeated to obtain effective reliefs, whereby it Recommended for particularly striking reliefs, fine and finest details by scratching in beforehand to work out the relief with a needle or other instruments to be artistically completed.
The essential advantage of these methods is that they use the masses as solutions By means of a brush, every fineness can be applied, while the drawings have hitherto been done must be engraved in the top layer.
