KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
In patent specification 130034 it is shown that certain aromatic bases which form the group - NH - CH 2 - or - NR - CH 2 - (where "R" = alkyl) are attached to benzene (toluene or xylene) on both sides. Carbon atoms bonded, contained once or more times in the molecule, and which can generally be called amidobenzyl bases, have a peculiarly changing effect on coal dyes which contain the primary or secondary amido group once or more times in the molecule.
While there this peculiar reaction mainly in the various groups of the basic tar dyes was investigated, is now their applicability to the group the azo dyes, especially on the so-called. "Congo colors" have been examined more closely. "Congo colors" are understood here to mean those nouns cotton azo dyes which by the action of tetrazodiphenyl, tetrazoditolyl and similar binuclear tetrazo compounds on the aromatic amine sulfonic acids and oxyamine sulfonic acids of the benzene and naphthalene series arise or have arisen can be thought of.
Dadurch dürften den neuen veränderten Congofarben Gebiete der FärbereiThe striking fact has now emerged that the changes which the bases named in the main patent under I, II and III produce in the congo dyes are of a quite different nature from those which have been observed in the basic dyes. There a striking change in nuance was primarily the most obvious characteristic of the change that had occurred; here, in the case of the congo dyes, the change in shade is usually very slight, often hardly noticeable. All the other changes, however, are all the more intrusive: under the action of the bases mentioned, the congo dyes usually become very sparingly soluble, mostly even insoluble in cold and even in boiling water. This circumstance implies that it is not advisable to prepare these new dyes in substance in order to then dye them on the fiber, but that the new dyes appear to be intended to be produced on the fiber. The dyeings obtained in this way are then, owing to the mentioned insolubility of the dyes, outstandingly waterfast and washfast. The main change which the congo colors undergo under the influence of the bases identified in the main patent consists in the fact that the well-known acid sensitivity of these dyes is reduced to a degree, and in some cases almost eliminated. As a result, the new changed Congo colors are likely to be areas of dyeing
eröffnet werden, welche den ursprünglichen wegen ihrer hohen Säureempfindlichkeit bisher verschlossen waren.opened up, which were the original ones because of their high sensitivity to acids were locked.
Die praktische Ausführung möge durch folgende Beispiele erläutert werden:The general procedure for the production of the products of change just mentioned Congo dyes consists simply in the fact that the latter - regardless of whether in Substance, e.g. B. dissolved in water or on the fiber - with the salts one of the im Main patent treated bases identified in more detail for some time. The practical execution may be explained by the following examples:
Beispiel i.
Farbstoff ausExample i.
Dye off
ι Mol. Benzidinι Mol. Benzidine
Naphthionsäure
Naphthionsäure.Naphthionic acid
Naphthionic acid.
A. In Substanz.A. In substance.
Of the dye from ι Mol. Benzidine and 2 Mol. Naphthionic acid are dissolved in 3500 parts of water, 15.5 parts of hydrochloric acid monomethyl-p-amidobenzyl alcohol are added (obtained by the action of formaldehyde on hydrochloric acid monomethylaniline), dissolved in a little Water. The mixture is then warmed up on the water bath, and the new product dissolves separates out as a red precipitate. One filters, praises and dries.
B. Auf der Faser.B. On the fiber.
In the . known manner with the dye from ι mol. Benzidine and 2 mol. Naphthionic acid Dyed cotton is brought into a bath in the wetted state, which is the one mentioned in A. Contains hydrochloric acid salt of monomethyl-p-amidobenzyl alcohol dissolved, namely takes 0.3 kg of the hydrochloric acid salt are added to 15 kg of dyed goods. At the same time, it must be ensured that the bath reacts weakly acidic to congo paper, which can be done if necessary careful addition of dilute hydrochloric acid. achieved. The goods are colored in this bath immediately dark brown; the bath is now heated up to the boiling point and held there for about 30 minutes, during which the cotton takes on a brownish red color. You now lift the Ware from the bath, wriggle out, wash with very dilute cold soda solution and make finished in a known way. One now has a red-colored product, hardly in the shade different from the one dyed with the original dye, but absolutely waterfast and hardly more sensitive to dilute acetic acid; even from dilute mineral acids the commodity is no longer colored purple-black, but at most red-brown.
Under certain circumstances, the dye can also form in the dye bath itself after it has been drawn up the bulk of the dye to be made; in this case the bath is done weakly acidic by the addition of hydrochloric acid, the necessary amount of the hydrochloric acid is then made Salt to the base and handle for another half hour.
The formation of the new dyes on the fiber can also be effected in such a way that one the pre-colored goods are impregnated with the solution of the hydrochloric acid salts concerned and dampens. Instead of the hydrochloric acid salt, the salts can also be used in these and all other cases all those acids are used which prevent the excretion of the bases.

A.32 parts of the dye from 1 mole of tetrazodiphenyl and 1 mole each of salicylic acid and amidonaphthol sulfonic acid γ. Are dissolved in water; an aqueous solution of 27 parts of hydrochloric acid amidobenzylaniline is added and warmed to water bath temperature. The formation of the red product of change and its Isolation takes place exactly as in Example 1 A.
B. Auf der Faser.B. On the fiber.
.The cotton dyed with the dye of tetrazodiphenyl, salicylic acid and amidonaphthol sulfonic acid γ is treated at a water bath temperature with a solution of hydrochloric acid amidobenzylaniline exactly as described in Example 1 B., taking 0.4 kg of the base for every 15 kg of goods. The coloration obtained in this way is slightly more yellowish than that of the unchanged dye, but moreover completely waterfast and almost insensitive even to concentrated oxalic acid solution. .

The procedure here is the same as in the previous two examples. You bring them Was in a solution of the hydrochloric acid salt of the above-mentioned xylidine bases - on ι 5 kg Cotton 0.26 kg base - the red color instantly turning a deep dark brown turns over.
It is now heated to a water bath temperature for half an hour or until it comes to a boil, the color of the goods lightening again, only to finally become red again. the Completion takes place according to example 1B. The coloration obtained in this way is clearly more bluish than the one obtained with the original dye, while being completely waterfast, is through diluted acetic acid not changed and colored brownish by dilute hydrochloric acid, while as is well known, the original coloration by dilute mineral acids is black-blue and through dilute acetic acid turns dark brown.

Which of the bases identified in the main patent under I, II and III are used here brings is pretty indifferent in all cases; you get the new products - if it is a question of their representation in substance - always as insoluble or almost insoluble precipitates of the color of the starting material or at least slightly different from it. Because of their insolubility, these products are less suitable for dyeing textile fibers, but they are very suitable for manufacture from lacquer paints and to paper dyeing.
AuchThe main importance of the new products is their manufacture on the fiber. Even
In allen Fällen zeichnen sich — wie aus obiger Tabelle ersichtlich — die veränderten Färbungen vor den ursprünglichen durch gesteigerte Säure- und Wasserechtheit aus.here the shade achieved is mainly due to the choice of the original dye and is less influenced by the choice of base. In all cases stand out - as can be seen from the table above - the changed colorations before the original characterized by increased acid and water fastness.
