The invention relates to a method of manufacture of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid by catalytic hydrogenation of benzoic acid.
Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid has mainly been used as an intermediate compound for the production of ε-caprolactam, which in turn is used for the production of polymers, especially polycaproamide will, meaning.
These polymers are produced in quantities of many millions of kilograms, so that accordingly large amounts of starting material have to be made available.
Willstätter u. a., Ber. dtsch. Chem. Ges., Bd. 45, 1912, S. 1476; Sitka, a. a. O., S. 3592; USA.-Patentschrift 2 675 390; Smith u. a., J. Am. chem. Basische Lösungsmittel, wie wäßrige Alkalien (Waser, a.a.O.; Ipatiew, Ber. dtsch. chem. It is known to produce cyclohexanecarboxylic acid by catalytic hydrogenation of benzoic acid. However, many processes based on this hydrogenation have disadvantages which prevent them from being used industrially. In those of these processes, for example, in which organic solvents such as methanol are used (Kindler et al., Chem. Ber., Vol. 90, 1957, p. 750), esters are thus formed as by-products, the removal of which is difficult but necessary in order to avoid possible contamination of the desired acid-free product. If higher alcohols are used as solvents (as in the process of Was er, HeIv. Chim. Acta, Vol. 8, 1925, p. 117), their separation from the relatively low-melting acid (F. 31 ° C.) difficult. Acid solvents, such as acetic acid (cf. Willstätter et al., Ber. Dtsch. Chem. Ges., Vol. 45, 1912, p. 1476; Sitka, op. Cit., P. 3592; USA. Patent 2,675,390; Smith et al , J. Am. Chem. Soc, Vol. 67, 1945, p. 272) are on the one hand difficult to put aside after their use and on the other hand are relatively expensive. Basic solvents, such as aqueous alkalis (Waser, loc. Cit .; Ipatiew, Ber. Dtsch. Chem. Ges., Vol. 89, 1926, p. 306) cause decarboxylation, so that only low yields are achieved when they are used.
CyclohexancarbonsäureIn these known processes, it is generally necessary to use relatively high pressures and / or temperatures which lead to side reactions and thus to a reduction in the yield of the hydrogenation product and its purity. The reduction of benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid with hydrogen is generally carried out in the presence of a metallic hydrogenation catalyst and with a benzoic acid melt or with the vaporous acid. It is preferably at temperatures between approximately the melting point of benzoic acid and 300 0 C and at a pressure in the range from 1 to 100 atmospheric process for the production of
Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid

Spheres carried out. When the benzoic acid is used in the form of a melt, the Reaction mass suitably stirred vigorously.
It has now been found that the rate of hydrogenation of benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid can be increased considerably without the formation of undesirable by-products such as Benzoic anhydride, is favored when hydrogen, which contains water vapor, and preferably so that is saturated is used.
The process of the invention for producing cyclohexanecarboxylic acid by hydrogenating benzoic acid in the presence of a metallic hydrogenation catalyst and in the presence of water, advantageous at pressures of 1 to 100 atmospheres and at elevated temperatures, is characterized by that the reaction medium is hydrogen mixed with water vapor in an amount not below 1 mg of water vapor per liter of hydrogen is supplied.
Die Erfindung ermöglicht auch die AnwendungSince in the process of the invention the rate of hydrogenation of benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is higher than in the known processes, better use is made of the hydrogenation plant, ie the capacity of the plant is increased, for example by 20 ° / 0 or more. The invention also enables application

höherer Reaktionstemperaturen, ohne daß dabei mehr Nebenprodukte gebildet werden, und damit eine weitere Senkung der für die Hydrierung erforderlichen Zeit.higher reaction temperatures without the formation of more by-products, and thus a further lowering the amount required for hydrogenation Time.
The favorable influence of steam on the time required for hydrogenation is shown in the table below. Benzoic acid was hydrogenated in an autoclave in the presence of activated carbon with 5% palladium as a catalyst at 180 ° C., water was added either as steam or as liquid water or was not present at all:

(a) Die Hydrierung wurde unterbrochen, bevor sie beendet war.( a ) The hydrogenation was stopped before it was finished.
The hydrogenation was discontinued after 18 hours and 65% of the water was distilled off, followed by further hydrogenation. The hydrogenation was interrupted again after a total of 22.5 hours. The product contained 10% benzoic acid. About 25% of the water originally contained was distilled off and the hydrogenation was continued for the remainder of the time.
The amount of water vapor used in the hydrogenation can be extremely wide Range vary. Most expedient and therefore preferred is hydrogen by liquid water as before introducing it into the reactor. At least 1 mg of water vapor per liter of hydrogen should be used, and amounts of water vapor of 10 to 15 mg / l have proven to be particularly favorable Proven hydrogen. If palladium is used as the catalyst, the water content of the benzoic acid should be not more than 3 percent by weight because of the sensitivity of the palladium catalysts to water and in any case, the amount of water in the benzoic acid is preferably not greater than about 1 percent by weight.
The metallic hydrogenation catalysts used in the process of the invention can, as well as their production, are known, examples of these catalysts are palladium. Rhodium, ruthenium, platinum, iridium, nickel and cobalt in the form of the free metals and their oxides and various salts, alone or as a mixture of two or more of these metals or compounds. The preferred catalyst is palladium. These catalysts are, as usual, together with a carrier, d. H. on the surface of an inert porous material such as activated carbon, aluminum oxide, Calcium carbonate or barium sulfate, dispersed or absorbed, is used. The concentration of the catalytic active material on the support is not essential and is usually in the range of 1 to 10 weight percent of the total catalyst, a useful and commercially available one The hydrogenation catalyst contains about 5 percent by weight palladium on activated carbon as a carrier. Also the The amount of catalyst used in the hydrogenation mixture is not essential Meaning and can, for example, be between 0.25 and 10% or more, based on the weight of the to hydrogenating benzoic acid. Preferably 0.25 to 5 percent by weight of catalyst with a Content of 5 percent by weight palladium on activated carbon used as a carrier.
The temperature at which the process is carried out can vary within a wide range. In general, regardless of whether the process is carried out in the liquid or vapor phase, a temperature of 120 to 300 ° C. is expedient and satisfactory. A temperature in the range from 160 to 250 ° C. is preferably used.
The pressure can also vary within a wide range. But there already with moderate pressures, like Pressures between 1 and 40 atmospheres, practically quantitative conversions can be achieved, is the Do not use higher pressures that require the use of more expensive equipment necessary.
The process of the invention can be in liquid phase or in vapor phase and batchwise or be carried out continuously. A system that is customary for carrying out such processes can be used as a system Plant can be used.
The presence of impurities, such as sulfur, halogen and soluble iron compounds, in considerable amounts affect the speed and extent of the reduction. The influence of such impurities The hydrogenation of benzoic acid can be prevented by taking the benzoic acid before reduction for at least 1 hour at a temperature above the melting point of benzoic acid with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or preferably an alkali salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid treated and the benzoic acid thus treated is then distilled off from the mixture. The distilled benzoic acid is then in a preferred state for the hydrogenation according to the invention. The at the hydrogenation of such pretreated benzoic acid catalyst used can be recovered and can be used again and again without losing any appreciable effect, an advantage that comes with use cannot be obtained from commercial benzoic acid in general.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples, parts and percentages refer to focus on the weight.
Die Schmelze wird mit 600Um-A mixture of 700 g of benzoic acid (with a content of less than 0.7% water and pretreated by heating with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and 0.5% of a catalyst with a content of 5% palladium on activated carbon is equipped with a stirrer heated stainless steel autoclave at 180 0 C. The melt is
Die Geschwindigkeit der Wasserstoffzufuhr beträgt 27,81 pro Stunde, gemessen am Gasauslaß des Reaktors mit einem »Naß«-Gasmesser.rotations per minute while hydrogen was passed under a pressure of 10.5 kg / cm 2 through a 15 cm column of water at room temperature and then through a distributor into the bottom part of the reactor. The rate of hydrogen supply is 27.81 per hour, measured at the gas outlet of the reactor with a "wet" gas meter.
This amount is sufficient to maintain a pressure of 10 atmospheres in the reactor. After 8 1 Z 2 hours, the hydrogen absorption ceases, and there are a total of 26 g of water evaporated by the hydrogen. The melt is discharged from the reactor through a heated filter in order to separate off the catalyst. In this way, cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is obtained in almost quantitative yield and good quality, freezing point 29.4 ° C. The infrared spectrum shows the presence of less than 1% benzoic acid and practically no benzoic anhydride.
If the above procedure is repeated except that the hydrogen does not flow through water before it is fed into the reactor at a rate of 3401 per hour, the Hydrogen absorption does not occur until after IOV2 hours. However, the crude product is of good quality and has a freezing point of 30.0 ° C.
Water vapor is introduced into hydrogen by introducing the dry hydrogen into 55 to 65 ° C warm water in a gas washing bottle. The wet hydrogen is then passed through 500 g of molten benzoic acid at 135 to 140 ° C. in a 1-1 flask. The thus formed vaporous mixture of benzoic acid, hydrogen and water (1 cm diameter) through a 25 cm long bed of catalyst granules of 15% nickel on alumina as carrier, which is maintained at 145 to 15O 0 C passed. The vapors are passed through the tube at practically atmospheric pressure at such a rate that 1200 g of benzoic acid are evaporated per hour.
After passing through the heated catalyst, the reaction mixture is cooled to 3O 0 C, and the non-condensable material, mainly unreacted hydrogen is recycled into the process. Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is obtained in good quality and yield. It contains a small amount of less than 2% benzoic acid, but no benzoic anhydride.
Die rohe Cyclohexancarbonsäure hat eine ausgezeichnete Qualität: Erstarrungspunkt 29,00C.A mixture of 700 g of pure benzoic acid with a content of less than 0.05% water and 0.5% of a catalyst composed of 5% palladium on activated carbon is heated to 240 ° C. in a stainless steel autoclave equipped with a stirrer. The melt is stirred at a speed of about 600 revolutions per minute, while hydrogen saturated with water at about 25 ° C. is introduced into the reaction mass through a distributor at the bottom of the reactor. The rate of hydrogen supply is such that the reaction mass is maintained under a hydrogen pressure of 10.5 atmospheres. The hydrogenation has ended after 2 hours and 35 minutes. The crude cyclohexane has an excellent quality: freezing point 29.0 0 C.
Die rohe Cyclohexancarbonsäure wird jedoch in vergleichbarer Qualität erhalten: Erstarrungspunkt 29,2°C.If this experiment is repeated using dry hydrogen in place of the Saturated hydrogen water vapor takes three hours to complete the hydrogenation. However, the crude cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is obtained in a comparable quality: solidification point 29.2 ° C.
A comparison of the data in these examples shows that in the presence of water vapor in the hydrogen used to hydrogenate benzoic acid a significantly shorter time than when it was used of dry hydrogen is required to completely hydrogenate the aryl nucleus without the quality of the product is deteriorated.
The process of converting benzoic acid to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid by catalytic hydrogenation can thus according to the invention by the simple measure of adding water vapor to the hydrogen to be converted can be improved.
The details given in the above examples can of course be modified in many ways will. For example, instead of the palladium or nickel catalyst used, a other hydrogenation catalyst, such as a rhodium, ruthenium, platinum or cobalt catalyst, or es Oxides or various salts of these metals can be used. These can also be catalytic active materials can be applied to other conventional porous supports. The water vapor can be in different Way to be mixed with the hydrogen, for example by adding water vapor to the Initiates hydrogen flow. Instead of hydrogen, gas mixtures can be used which, in addition to hydrogen, are inert Gas or more inert gases contain, for example synthesis gas, can be used.
