Description
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
- JVi 118003 KLASSE 38 δ.- JVi 118003 CLASS 38 δ.
The subject of the invention is a knife which is used for the production of angularly profiled Columns, table and chair legs, balusters etc. are used by »planing across the wood shall be.
Man erhielt· also keinen reinen Schnitt, keine glatte Oberfläche. The cutting tools hitherto used in such processing of the wood had the disadvantage that wooden parts were partially torn from the workpiece. So there was no clean cut, no smooth surface. This action of the cutting tools is explained by the fact that, since the edge of the knife must be directed at an acute angle towards the surface of the wood, those parts of the edge which work the deeper parts of the profile are those parts of the edge which the upper or higher parts work on the profile, go ahead and therefore act like a wedge, in such a way that the wood lying on top is torn open before it comes into contact with the relevant part of the cutting edge. This will emerge from Figs. Ι a and ι b of the accompanying drawing; Fig. Ι a shows a profile that is to be produced, Fig. Ι b shows the side view of a knife in the working position. the pieces of wood. From these figures it can be seen that the deeper parts abc of the profile are attacked by the corresponding part d of the knife earlier than the upper parts m η op, which are formed by the part qr of the knife, and the wedge or breaking effect mentioned will occur accordingly. The latter effect is less of a damaging importance when it comes to planing along the grain; but as soon as the "cross planing" comes into question, this mode of action of the knives becomes noticeable through the abrasion of the fibers.
This effect could be avoided by designing the knife in such a way that the lower part d of the knife edge, in the above example, comes into effect behind the part qr of the knife edge. This could be achieved by using a knife d (see Fig. 1 c) and a second knife qr . But since the lines of the profile merge into one another, a very large number of such knives arranged one behind the other would have to be used in order to achieve the desired result. It is therefore more expedient to grind the edge of this knife with the use of a single knife in such a way that on each part of the edge a point of the edge which penetrates deeper into the wood is behind (with regard to the movement of the knife) the adjacent point of the edge stand, which should intervene less deeply in the wood. The wedge effect of the parts of the cutting edge reaching deeper into the wood is then irrelevant, since the fibers lying above have already been cut through.
The manufacture of such planer knives can expediently be done in such a way that this inverted profile (complimentary profile) on the outside of a hollow steel cylinder is turned out. This cylinder is then cut open in the longitudinal direction. That so The planer knife produced is then ground from the other edge in such a way that the The grinding surface is given a jagged shape.
Fig. 3 zeigt eine mittelst desselben hergestellte Säule. Such a knife is in Fig. Ι in side view and shown in Fig. 2 in end view. Fig. 3 shows one produced by means of the same Pillar. Fig. 4 shows the mutual position of the wood and steel during work and Fig. 5 is a perspective drawing of the knife.
All four knives have the same shape. They consist of knife blades 103 and feet 105 on each side, by means of which the knives are held to the head. The knife blade is part of a round hollow body, the outside of which is provided with the reverse profile of the object to be manufactured. 107 is the rear edge of the knife and 108 is the knife edge. While the rear edge can be straight, the knife edge is a broken line (see Fig. Dqersftgahvwixykil) in which the protruding corners de / g hi the parts of the profiled column which have the largest diameter (see Fig. 3, which figure represents the finished column), while the rear corners qr stuvw xy \ correspond to the parts of the column which have the smallest diameter. This line can easily be obtained by grinding, and the exact shape of it is of course a matter for the skilled craftsman.
