The invention relates to photographic materials containing their halide silver emulsions Use of certain water-soluble polyoxyalkylene derivatives are chemically sensitized.
The use of polyoxyethylenes or derivatives of alkylene oxides with amines, phenols, Alcohols and dehydration products of compounds with hexitol rings as sensitizers for Silver halide emulsions are known (cf. in this connection US Patents 2,423,549, 2,441,389, 2,240,472, 2,400,532, etc.).
In general, polyoxyethylene or alkylene oxide derivatives have a molecular weight of at least 300, preferably from 1500 to 10,000 or more.
B. in M e e s, »The Theory of the Photographic Process«, S. 459 ff. It has been found that these compounds are powerful chemical sensitizers. Your use however, has been limited by their noticeable tendency to fog photographic silver halide emulsions during storage, especially at elevated temperatures and increased humidity. To counteract this tendency while taking advantage of the sensitizing properties of these compounds, it was necessary to use special antifoggants with the sensitizers, due to the fact that the usual antifoggants, such as those z. B. in M e s, “The Theory of the Photographic Process ", pp. 459 ff. (Published by the MacMillan Company, New York, 1946) are described in the Combat the veil caused by the sensitizer are ineffective. In the U.S. Patent 2 704 716 is therefore used as an antifoggant, mellonic acid or cyameluric acid; U.S. Patent 2,716,062 discloses 4-oxy-6-alkyl-1,3,3a-7-tetrazaindenes and US Pat. No. 2,728,666 mentions particular compounds of mercury with amines or amine salts.
According to the invention it has now been found, surprisingly, that alkylene oxide derivatives, which by condensation made of pentaerythritol with 1,2-propylene oxide, a molecular weight of at least 300 and are still water-soluble, very effective as sensitizers for silver halide emulsions are without the excessive tendency towards fogging of the above-mentioned alkylene oxide compounds and if fogging occurs, it can be prevented by using conventional antifoggants be reduced. Furthermore, these condensation products act not only in the above-mentioned, surprising Way, but they also reduce the brittleness and static charge in films that are in the they are incorporated or to which they are applied.

Die Proben zeigten eine relative Empfindlichkeit von 175 mit einem SchleierIn a known manner, a silver halide emulsion in gelatin containing 4% silver iodide and 96% Containing silver bromide, applied to a film support. After applying the layer, a 60 aqueous gelatin solution containing 20 g of gelatin per liter and 1.2 g of the condensation product of 1,2-propylene oxide and containing pentaerythritol, applied thereon as an abrasion resistant layer; the condensation product possessed a molecular weight of 450. 65 After drying, film samples were exposed and treated as in example 1.
