It is known that 2-mercaptobenzimidazole can be prepared if o-phenylenediamine is reacted with carbon disulfide and alkali metal hydroxide to form the alkali metal salt of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and the 2-mercaptobenzimidazole is liberated therefrom by treatment with acid. The o-phenylenediamine is obtained from o-nitroaniline by reduction with sodium sulfide solution. However, this method is cumbersome and results in starting from o-nitroaniline a yield of only 75 1 Vo. The total reaction time is also about 40 hours. The by-products of the unreacted sodium sulphide are hydrogen sulphide and sodium thiosulphate, sulfur and sulfur dioxide.
It has now been found that 2-mercaptobenzimidazole is essential in a one-step process Can be produced more economically if one mole of o-nitroaniline with "about 1 mole of carbon disulfide and with 1 mole of hydrogen sulfide or 1 / a mole of an acidic salt of hydrogen sulfide at temperatures in the range from 40 to 250 "C and at pressures from about 0 to 100 atmospheres in the presence of water.

The inventive method can when using sodium hydrogen sulfide as the acidic Salt of hydrogen sulfide can be illustrated by the following reaction scheme:.
NO2 NO 2
NH2 NH 2
Preference is given to using the acidic salts of hydrogen sulfide for the reaction, such as Sodium hydrogen sulfide. However, if appropriate, the acidic hydrogen sulfide salts can be used in the reaction mixture generate yourself, e.g. B. by the addition of an equivalent of an inorganic or organic base, such as potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, magncsium hydroxide, pyridine, piperidine or pyrrolidine, and 1 mole of hydrogen sulfide. The reaction is preferably carried out in the temperature range between 100 and 160 C and at pressures in the range from 10 to 20 atmospheres.
Falls jedoch das Salz des 2-Mercaptobenzimidazols als Reaktionsprodukt gewünscht wird, kann es in einfacher Weise Compared to the previously known method, the method according to the invention has the advantage that the 2-mercaptobenzimidazole obtained in significantly better yield, based on the o-nitroaniline is, the reaction time is significantly shortened, so that the apparatus is used much better can be. Furthermore, the 2-mercaptobenzimidazole according to the invention Process can be obtained directly in free form and not as an alkali salt, so that the acidification of the Reaction product unnecessary, whereby a continuous operation is made possible. But if so the salt of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole is desired as the reaction product, it can be done in a simple manner
