Cerlegierungen mittels Strangverpressens herzustellen.
Use of pyrophoric cerium-mixed metal-iron alloys for production
of flints by extrusion In the German patent 378 593 of the year
As early as 1919 it was proposed to use moldings from cerium iron and other pyrophores
Manufacture cereal alloys by extrusion. But it has been shown
that in this process the expensive pressing tools wear out quickly and that the
Excessive hardness of these rods will reduce the life of the lighters equipped with them
very diminished. An even greater disadvantage is the completely inadequate ignitability
the press bars. The German patent specification 891.824 explains the cause
the low pyrophoricity of the extruded flints is too low
Eutectic content of the alloy, of which a sufficiently large proportion is present
had to be around the brittle Cereisenkristallite, which are used as the carrier of the pyrophores
Properties are to be viewed before breaking under that occurring during extrusion
To preserve deformation. Accordingly, it is recommended in the patent mentioned,
For pressing alloys with a low iron content to form the eutectic matrix
to multiply and thus to achieve a better embedding of the iron crystals.
This process also causes rapid wear of the pressing tools, a disadvantage
caused by the high pressure.
It has now been found that the extrusion pressure is substantially reduced
can be, if the cerium (MM) iron alloys to be pressed between more
contain as 0.45 and 1.8 "/ o (preferably up to 1.3%) copper. Copper forms with
Cerium at 15 percent by weight cerium is a eutectic melting at 415 ° C. Mischmetal
and copper result in alloys with a lower melting point. From the three-component system cerium-iron-copper
even alloys are known that melt below 400 ° C. The favorable pressing temperature
pyrophoric cerium-MM-iron alloys, which depends on their composition,
is between 400 and 500 ° C and for most alloys around 480 ° C, so considerable
higher than the melting points given above. It follows that cerium-MM-Fe alloys containing copper
for the purposes of the invention contain liquid fractions at the temperature of the extrusion.
The beneficial effect of the addition of copper can easily be explained by the assumption that
that the liquid portions act as a lubricant during the deformation and the
This facilitates the displacement of the crystal parts against each other. A
If the content of these lubricants is too low, the intended effect is not achieved
or only inadequately, while too high a proportion of it when deforming
the rest of the alloy is squeezed out.
The beneficial effect of having the right amount of liquid alloy in shaping cerium-MM-iron alloys was not yet known. Rather, the prevailing opinion was that liquid components at the pressing temperature were harmful and should therefore be avoided at all costs (cf., for example, German patent specification 891 824). In later German patents 1017 506, 1017 507 and 1019 949 the beneficial effect of a copper additive was recognized, but its permissible level was limited to 0.35 or 0.45 "/ o, because with higher copper contents a partial liquefaction of the alloy in the According to the results of our own work, alloys with more than 0.45% up to 2% Cu can still be pressed perfectly and advantageously. The beneficial effect of the addition of copper extends over the entire range the technical pyrophoric cerium-MM-iron alloys. It is particularly pronounced in the range from 18 to 28% Fe. Contents of 0.45 to 1.3 "/ oCu are particularly advantageous. A copper content in the cerium-iron is also favorable for other properties of the alloy; it improves the corrosion resistance and it makes the alloy easier to machine. This is particularly important in the case of the extruded alloys, because these usually tend to develop greater hardnesses (compared with the cast alloys). The alloys can also contain additions of magnesium, aluminum and / or silicon, which are usually added to technical pyrophoric cerium-iron alloys, up to a total of 5%. These elements are known to be added to give the ignition alloy certain advantageous properties For example, a low specific weight or a more closed sparkle when filing. Some of these additives reduce the compressibility, especially with larger amounts.
