EHe Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein verbessertes Verfahren zur partiellen Hydrierung von Butin-(2)diol-(l,4), das im folgenden als Butindiol bezeichnet wird, zu Buten-(2)-diol-(l,4), das im folgenden als Butendiol bezeichnet wird.EHe invention relates to an improved process for the partial hydrogenation of butyne- (2) diol- (l, 4), which is referred to below as butynediol, to butene- (2) -diol- (1,4), which is hereinafter is referred to as butenediol.
B. in BuM. Chem. The partial hydrogenation of butynediol to butanediol in the presence of a number of different catalysts and various methods are known. For many industrial purposes it is desirable to interrupt the hydrogenation of butynediol at the butenediol stage. Regarding the The latter compound has been described as causing some organic amines to hydrogenate butenediol to delay butanediol more than the hydrogenation of butynediol to butenediol. So is z. B. in BuM. Chem. Soc., Japan, 31, S-339-342 (1958); C. A., 52, 18199 d (1958), the stepwise hydrogenation of Butynediol to butenediol and then to butanediol with a palladium on calcium carbonate catalyst described. There it is stated that quinoline, but not pyridine or piperidine, is the first stage delay. Pyridine delays the second stage, while piperidine delays this more strongly and quinoline almost completely to do. Of these three amines, only QuinoEn would spontaneously interrupt complete hydrogenation.
In Doklady Akad. Nauk. In Doklady Akad. Nauk. S. S. S. R, 124, pp. 598 to 601 (1959); C. A., 53, p. 11 206 © (1959) is one similar hydrogenation with a nickel catalyst is described. There it is stated that pyridine is the second stage slows but does not stop, and that piperidine and quinoline respectively, the hydrogenation end at the butenediol stage.
Although, according to the last-mentioned parts of the literature, quinoline is the hydrogenation of butynediol at the butenediol stage interrupts, this amine boils at almost the same temperature as butenediol, causing its separation is extremely difficult by distillation. Because piperidine and pyridine are essential at one Boiling lower temperature than butenediol, they have advantages over the quinoline a lighter feasible distillation for the purpose of separation. In such cases, however, must be relatively large Quantities of these heterocyclic amines are used to interrupt the second hydrogenation, as will be explained in the following.
The main aim of the invention was to create an improved process for the reduction of butynediol to butenediol without using expensive heterocyclic amines in large quantities.

It has now been found that the hydrogenation of butynediol can be interrupted spontaneously at the butenediol stage if a Raney-Niekel catalyst or a copper-modified nickel catalyst is used in the presence of small amounts of ammonia, preferably in the range from about 0.05 to 0.30 moles per mole of butynediol used. The ammonia is very belly and does not contaminate the butenediol. The hydrogenation is expediently carried out at temperatures from about 25 to 100 ° C. and pressures from atmospheric pressure up to about 21 kg / cm 2 .
According to the method of the present invention, butyne- (2) -diol- (1,4) is converted into a non-reactive Solvents such as B. methyl, ethyl or propyl alcohol, dimethyl ether of ethylene glycol, or an aqueous solution with 20 to 50 ° / »butynediol with success with a high yield of butenediol hydrogenated. The aqueous solutions of butyne- (2) -diol- (1,4) have a pg value of about 2.5 to 6 im Commercially available.

The nickel catalyst used in the present invention is advantageously kept in finely divided form in the aqueous butynediol reaction medium. It can a Raney nickel catalyst prepared in accordance with US Pat. No. 1,628,190 or instead Nickel catalyst system, the dispersed, from a soluble or dispersible copper compound containing deposited copper. The amount of copper is not critical and can be between 0 and 50%. Should z. B. an aqueous butynediol solution is hydrogenated, it becomes a water-soluble one Copper compound, useful copper salts of strong acids, such as. B. copper sulfate, copper chloride, Copper nitrate, or the copper salts of weak acids, such as copper cyanate, copper formate, copper acetate or copper carbonate, added. Copper oxide can also be used. The nickel replaced the copper out of solution, and any remaining unreduced copper becomes during the hydrogenation reduced. The precipitated copper is dispersed or deposited on the nickel catalyst. One such catalyst is described in U.S. Patent 2,892,801. The amount of Nickel catalyst, d. H. Nickel alone, or nickel modified with copper, is generally about 0.1 to 10 percent by weight, preferably 0.5 to 3 percent by weight, of the butynediol.
The amount of catalyst used is not critical since the catalyst is not deactivated during the hydrogenation and is reused can be. If a given amount of butynediol is to be hydrogenated to butenediol, the rate of hydrogenation varies directly with the rate used Amount of catalyst.

In a stainless steel hydrogenation vessel of 3.81 capacity 1442 g of a technical. 35.8% strength aqueous butynediol solution, 51.9 g ammonia solution (26 ° Baume) and 30 g nickel-copper catalyst (10% copper, based on the weight of the nickel catalyst). The hydrogenation took place at 50 ° C. and 21 kg / cm 2 . The hydrogen pressure was maintained until hydrogen absorption ceased. The reaction mixture was filtered, the filtrate was distilled under reduced pressure and an 83% yield of butene- (2) -diol- (1,4) was obtained. This material had a freezing point of 4.0 ° C. without fractional distillation, a butenediol.
To illustrate that the presence of ammonia during hydrogenation is not a function the alkalinity, the following example was performed:
VergleichsversuchComparative experiment
Example 1 was repeated with the exception that the ammonia solution was replaced by an equivalent Amount of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution was. Before the hydrogenation stopped spontaneously, about absorbs twice as much hydrogen. The distilled product obtained in 88% yield was butanedi oil with a freezing point of 18.3 ° C and a refractive index of 1.4449. The same Results were obtained with potassium hydroxide. This clearly shows that the cheap ones achieved with ammonia Results are not a function of the basicity per se, but especially of the ammonia.
Example 1 was repeated with the exception that the hydrogenation was carried out at a temperature of 40 ° C. and an excess pressure of 5.3 kg / cm 2 . After the distillation, 86 ° / »butenediol with a freezing point of 3.9 ° C., a refractive index of 1.4725 and a butenediol content of 89% were obtained.
As stated above, piperidine and pyridine boil much lower than butenediol, creating a Separation by distillation becomes possible. From the table above it can be seen that comparatively large amounts of piperidine and pyridine for Interruption of the second hydrogenation are required. This is particularly noticeable when one considers the weight instead of the mole numbers, since piperidine and pyridine are about five times the mol-
Daher ist es offensichtlich, daß Ammoniak beim großtechnischen Arbeiten zur Umwandlung von Butindiol in Butendiol weit überlegen und wesentlich billiger ist.own weight of ammonia; furthermore, these amines have a higher boiling point than Ammonia, which makes it more difficult to separate it from butenediol by distillation. Therefore, it is Obviously, ammonia in the large-scale work to convert butynediol into butenediol is far superior and much cheaper.
