The present invention relates to a sulfur-polyacrylonitrile composite containing polyacrylonitrile particles, sulfur and one or more conductive carbon additives. Stand der TechnikState of the art
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have received much attention because of their high energy density and low cost. However, the theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh / kg can not be achieved because of the insulating property of sulfur. Conductive additives must therefore be added and thus the theoretical value is reduced to a realistic 600 Wh / kg. In addition, elemental sulfur is converted during reduction into polysulfides S x 2 , which are soluble in the electrolyte. Therefore, some concepts have been conducted that pay attention to the maintenance of sulfur in the cathode matrix. One of the most promising concepts is the embedding of sulfur in a conductive matrix of pyrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN). This attractive sulfur-polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) composite has been used as a cathode active material which has high specific capacity, good efficiency, low self-discharge, excellent cycle stability, and improved rate property. With regard to the status quo in high energy density battery applications, the energy density of this Li-sulfur system must be significantly improved. In addition, many investigations have been made to improve the material capacity of the SPAN composite material.

The SPAN nanoparticles can be mixed with carbon black and polyvinyl difluoride (PVDF) and an Al film can be coated therewith. Lithium foil can be used as the counter electrode and assembled with a separator and carbonate electrolyte consisting of LiPF 6 salt and ethylene carbonate solvent.
According to a further aspect, the present invention relates to an electrode containing the sulfur-polyacrylonitrile composite material according to the invention.
According to a further aspect, the present invention relates to a lithium-sulfur battery containing the electrode according to the invention.
Due to the large surface area of PAN according to the invention, which offers a large reaction sintering phase to sulfur, a higher sulfur content can be achieved compared to the conventional synthetic process starting from conventional crude PAN. At the same time, the SPAN obtained according to the invention has a higher electronic conductivity, in comparison to the SPAN synthesized only from the conventional PAN and sulfur. CNTs on the outer surface of PAN continue to remain on the outer surface of SPAN, offering a conductive coating. Thus, this composite SPAN electrode has a high cathode capacity, a low resistance, an excellent cycle stability, and a favorable rate property.
The inventors have investigated the chemical process for dehydrogenating polyacrylonitrile in the presence of sulfur, and discovered the chemical structure of the polyacrylonitrile-derived cyclized backbone. It has been found that a higher synthesis temperature leads to a higher degree of graphitization of the polymer backbone and finally to a higher C-rate capability and a higher cycle stability. However, the composite material is degraded when made at a higher temperature, resulting in a lower sulfur content and, ultimately, a lower cathode capacity. At the same time, the SPAN composite material produced at a higher temperature has a larger specific surface area, which also promotes the higher C rate property. Despite this trade-off between capacity and high C rate capability, an optimum synthesis temperature of 390 to 460 ° C can be selected.
The applications of the composite material of the present invention include high energy density and acceptably high power density lithium-ion batteries for energy storage applications, e.g. Power tools, photovoltaic cells and electric vehicles.
