Description
Image display device with an electroluminescent screen The invention deals with an image display device with an electroluminescent screen, in which a phosphor layer is arranged between crossed grids, the consist of parallel, mutually insulated, perpendicular conductors which signal voltages are applied in a predetermined order.
Patent 2698915 discloses an electroluminescent screen with crossed grids. The electroluminescent screen essentially consists made up of a layer of electroluminescent material sandwiched between two different Sets of ladders are arranged, the ladder of the two sets being substantially extend perpendicular to each other. When applying successive voltage signals by means of mechanical switching devices to the individual conductors of each set, it is possible to to stimulate the phosphor and thereby generate a luminous image. The mechanical Switching means are suitable for low speeds, but they are not sufficient at the usual television sampling frequencies.
In the earlier German patent 1002 789 there is an image display device placed under protection, in which the light panel with the crossed ladders and the phosphor layer is arranged in a vacuum. There are two in the same vacuum Cathode ray generator housed, whose cathode rays hit the ends of the crossed Head and hit the ladder of one. Systems positive and on those of the other system generate negative charges.
The invention proposes in an image display device with a Electroluminescent screen in which the phosphor layer is sandwiched between crossed grids is arranged, which consist of parallel, mutually insulated conductors on which applied signal voltages in a predetermined order by cathode rays are, before, these signal voltages capacitively over by the electron beam of two Cathode ray tubes scanned dielectrics, preferably the tube walls, to put on. The electroluminescent screen of the arrangement according to the invention has a Layer of electroluminescent material on one side of which is a first grid, consisting of parallel conductors, and on the other side of which a second grid, consisting of conductors arranged parallel to each other, is located, the conductors of the respective grids being arranged transversely to one another and between the grids and the electroluminescent layer on at least one side a layer of dielectric material is disposed. The basic idea of the invention consists in applying the signal voltages capacitively. this happens preferably as follows: A first electron beam scans the first tube wall and generates electrostatic charges on the conductors of the first Grid are capacitively coupled. A second electron beam scans the second Tube wall and generates electrostatic charges that are transferred to the conductors of the second grid are capacitively coupled.
With reference to the drawings, in which exemplary embodiments are shown the invention will now be explained in more detail.
Fig. 1 is a view of an embodiment of the invention; Fig. Figure 2 is a section along the line A-A of Figure 1; Fig. 3 shows a partial section of a particularly modified example of the invention.
With reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the first embodiment of the Invention to be described. In these figures are a phosphor layer 1 and a layer 11 with nonlinear impedance (ferroelectric layer or polarizer layer) arranged between the crossed grids 2 and 3. The individual heads of this Grids protrude somewhat beyond layers 1 and 11, as indicated by the reference numerals 12 and 13 is displayed. Bias rails 14 and 15 are with the individual conductors 4 and 5 of the respective grids are connected by means of suitable resistors 16 and 17. The purpose of these resistors is to short-circuit the corresponding conductors to prevent. The battery 18 provides the rails 14 and 15 with a suitable bias voltage, which brings the ferroelectric layer 11 close to saturation. At the Apply a suitable excitation voltage to two conductors, e.g. 19 and 20, the phosphor material lights up at point 21, which is the space between corresponds to these two ladders. Through successive brisk investing an excitation voltage to the corresponding conductors of the grid 2 and 3 can therefore a visible image can be generated. Two cathode ray tubes 22 and 23 are open the protruding conductor ends 12 and 13 arranged. Since these two tubes 22 and 23 can be identical, only one tube will be described in more detail with reference to FIG. The tube consists of an evacuated glass envelope: - It is elongated and points with the exception of the flat side 25, which is on the extensions 12 of the ladder rests on a substantially round cross-section. With the exception of the planes On side 25, the inner surface of the tube is provided with a conductive coating 26. A beam generating system 27 of the usual type is at one end of the enclosure 24 and generates an electron beam whose path is normally parallel to the level of the ladder extensions 12 and transversely to these. Furthermore are suitable Deflection means such as the electrostatic deflection plates 28 for deflection of the electron beam in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the conductor extension 12 provided.
The electron beams of the tubes 22 and 23 can be the corresponding Wall parts 25 which are arranged opposite the ladder extensions 12 and 13, sample at either the same or different speeds. Around To produce a conventional television picture, the sampling frequency of the tube 22 corresponds the image change, while the frequency of the tube 23 corresponds to the line frequencies. -It is desirable that the electron beams have a large current density. Such currents are usually generated with the help of so-called Pierce beam generating systems or generated with the usual triode arrangements. These beam generating systems produce a beam with a rectangular cross-section. Such rays are through the dashed lines 29 and 30 (Fig. 1) drawn by the beam generating systems of the two tubes 22 and 23 go out, reproduced. The importance of high current density of the beam will be explained in more detail below: The remote signal is sent to the Control grid or other control electrode of the beam generating system of the tube 22 is applied to modulate the beam in its density. When applying the deflection signals at each of the two tubes the point of impact moves in a straight line on the wall 25 continues and releases secondary electrons with a secondary emission factor from this wall greater than 1. These secondary electrons are passed through the conductive wall covering 26 collected. On the flat wall 25 of the tube 22, verden by the electron beam thus generating positive charges corresponding to the instantaneous amplitude of the television signal correspond. These charges are generated by capacitive coupling on a conductor extension 12 pulse voltages, while the tube 23 constant, also positive charges or impulse voltages, but of a different height, for the conductors of the other grid system generated.
If at the same moment the beam 29 generates a charge on the conductor 20 and the beam 30 generates a charge on the conductor 19, a point of light is generated in the space 21. If the beam 29 scans the corresponding conductors at the image frequency and the beam 30 scans its conductors at the line frequency, the fluorescent screen 1 generates a conventional raster image.
In order to generate pulses of sufficient intensity on the conductors, it is important to have the coupling capacitance between the inner surface of the tube and the conductors and the beam intensity are greater. A great coupling capacity can be achieved by the following: a) The flat wall 25 should be as thin as possible are executed.
Das plastische Material dient als Kopplungsfilm zwischen der Röhrenwand 25 und den Leiterverlängerungen.b) Air gaps between the outer wall 25 and the ladder extensions should be avoided by using a plastic material with a high dielectric constant will. The plastic material serves as a coupling film between the tube wall 25 and the ladder extensions.
Such an improved capacitive coupling through the tube wall too the ladders can be achieved by the slightly modified embodiment of Fig.3 will. The same reference numbers are used for the same parts. Instead of the flat wall 25 of Fig. 2 is a flat window 31 made of ferroelectric steel used. This material can be the same as that for layer 11 of the screen is used. Appropriate connections are used to provide the window 31 with to connect the tube casing in a vacuum-tight manner. The window 31 is in the same Arranged in the same way as the flat tube wall 25 on the conductor connections 12.
Because the ferroelectric window has a high dielectric constant possesses, a large coupling capacity to the conductor ends 12 is guaranteed.
Since the electron beam scans the flat wall quickly, it is possible that the electrostatic charges it generates do not disappear quickly enough. In this case, it is desirable. a semiconducting coating on the inner wall of the flat tube part to use the charge as soon as possible after its generation to remove. Titanium oxide has proven to be a suitable material for the semiconducting layer proved to be vapor-deposited onto the tube wall in an oxygen atmosphere. The vapor-deposited film can be heated either in a vacuum or in oxygen, to obtain the desired resistance properties. Another way to get rid of it of the charges is the reduction in jet velocity as it is returned to a value below that required for the generation of secondary electrons Worth. The speed of the writing beam is made so great that the necessary secondary electrons are generated, but when the beam returns, the speed is reduced to such an extent that the secondary emission factor is less than 1. It can naturally also all other known methods of removing the charge can be used between two writing periods.
